Gentek 1900 Series Call Sizes and Rough Openings: A Contractor’s Ordering Guide

A window described as “3/0 by 5/0” has not been fully specified. Contractors must distinguish the call size, rough opening, actual frame, exterior J-channel, clear opening and visible glass before releasing a Gentek 1900 Series order.

Gentek provides an extensive size guide for its 1900 Series new-construction windows . The guide includes dimensions for single-hung, double-hung, slider, picture and factory-combination models.

Those tables are valuable, but they must be read carefully. Dimensions that appear close to one another can answer completely different questions. Using the exterior J-channel dimension where the frame dimension is needed can produce a serious framing or masonry error.

The measurement rule that prevents most ordering disputes

Record what each dimension represents. Never place an order using an unlabeled width and height written on scrap paper, a text message or a photograph.

Six Different Window Dimensions

Dimension What It Describes Common Mistake
Call Size A nominal ordering designation used to identify a standard size. Treating it as the exact frame dimension.
Rough Opening The framed opening intended to receive the window. Assuming every rough opening is perfectly square and built to plan.
Actual Window Size The physical frame dimension measured at the manufacturer’s designated points. Confusing the frame with an attached nailing fin or J-channel.
Exterior J-Channel Dimension The outside dimension including the visible integral J-channel. Using it to frame the rough opening.
Net-Clear Opening The unobstructed opening produced through normal sash operation. Substituting frame or visible-glass dimensions when checking egress.
Visible Glass The portion of glass visible inside the sash and frame. Treating it as the ventilation or emergency escape opening.

What Does a Call Size Mean?

A call size is a convenient product designation. In common construction notation, a call size such as 3/0 by 5/0 generally communicates a nominal width of 3 feet and nominal height of 5 feet.

The call size does not necessarily equal the actual frame size. Gentek’s size guide separately lists call size, actual window size, exterior dimension, rough opening, clear opening and visible glass.

Never build a custom opening from the call-size name alone. Obtain the manufacturer’s current dimensional information for the exact model.

Actual Frame Size Versus Rough Opening

A new-construction window normally needs installation clearance within the framed rough opening. That clearance provides space to position, shim and fasten the unit without forcing it into an irregular opening.

Gentek’s published 1900 Series guide shows many common configurations with an actual frame dimension approximately one-half inch smaller than the listed rough-opening dimension. That relationship should not be applied blindly to every style, custom configuration or current product revision.

Use the formula or table printed for the exact model being ordered. Confirm unusual sizes and factory combinations with the supplier before framing.

Do not “improve” the clearance without approval

Too little clearance can make the window impossible to square. Excessive clearance can complicate fastening, shimming, insulation and flashing. Use the manufacturer’s intended rough opening.

Why the Integral J-Channel Has a Larger Dimension

Selected Gentek 1900 Series frames include an integral brickmould-style J-channel intended to receive compatible exterior cladding. The J-channel projects beyond the primary window frame.

Gentek’s size guide therefore lists a separate exterior dimension that includes the J-channel. This dimension is useful for planning exterior spacing and cladding relationships, but it is not the frame size inserted into the rough opening.

On a tight grouping, masonry opening or window located near a corner, the J-channel projection can affect exterior clearances even when the frame fits the rough opening correctly.

Measure Width and Height at More Than One Location

A rough opening can be wider at the top than at the bottom or taller on one side than the other. Bowed studs and inconsistent sill framing may not be obvious from one measurement.

Before ordering or accepting the framing, record:

  • Width near the top of the opening
  • Width at the middle
  • Width near the bottom
  • Height near the left jamb
  • Height at the center
  • Height near the right jamb
  • Both diagonal measurements
  • Sill level and jamb plumb

The smallest width or height may control whether the frame can fit, but the complete opening geometry determines whether it can be installed square. Correct defective framing rather than ordering a smaller window to avoid the problem.

Check the Opening Depth

Width and height are not the only dimensions that matter. Wall depth, sheathing, continuous insulation, exterior cladding, interior finish and jamb extensions affect the completed opening.

Gentek’s historical 1900 Series specifications identify different jamb depths for certain single-hung and double-hung products and list several primed wood jamb-extension depths. Current availability should be confirmed before ordering.

Do not assume one jamb-extension dimension works throughout a building. Bathrooms, masonry veneers, additions and upgraded wall assemblies may have different finished depths.

Drywall Returns Require Early Coordination

Gentek offers 1/2-inch and 5/8-inch drywall-return channels as alternatives to traditional interior wood trim in applicable configurations.

The drywall thickness and return detail must be confirmed before ordering. Changing from 1/2-inch to 5/8-inch drywall after the window package is released can create a visible fit problem.

Coordinate the return with corner bead, finished sill details, tile, interior casing and wall thickness. A drywall return simplifies one part of the finish, but it does not eliminate dimensional planning.

Factory-Mulled Units Need Overall Dimensions

Twin and triple windows should not be ordered by adding individual call sizes and assuming the result equals the finished combination.

Factory mulls, reinforcement, shared frames, drip caps and exterior accessories can affect overall dimensions. Gentek offers specific twin and triple models within the 1900 Series, including single-hung and double-hung combinations.

Confirm:

  • The overall factory frame width and height
  • The required rough opening
  • Whether the combination is factory mulled or field assembled
  • Mull reinforcement requirements
  • Individual lite proportions
  • Grid and meeting-rail alignment
  • Shipping and jobsite access limitations
  • Structural ratings for the complete combination

Masonry Openings Are Not Wood-Framed Rough Openings

A masonry opening can require different perimeter clearances, attachment, flashing and sealant-joint design from a conventional wood-framed opening.

Confirm whether the dimension supplied by the mason represents the clear masonry opening, a wood buck, the intended window frame or the exterior trim boundary.

Brick, block and concrete openings can also vary from top to bottom. Measure after the opening is sufficiently complete rather than relying exclusively on nominal masonry dimensions.

Sealant-joint width, backer rod, drainage and flashing must be designed rather than treated as whatever space remains after the window arrives.

Finished Floors Affect Window Placement

The framed sill height is measured before flooring on many projects. The final height above the finished floor may change after underlayment, tile, hardwood, carpet or other finish materials are installed.

This matters for:

  • Emergency escape and rescue opening sill height
  • Safety-glazing locations
  • Accessibility and reach requirements
  • Interior stool and apron dimensions
  • Alignment with countertops, cabinets and plumbing fixtures
  • Exterior head and sill alignment across the elevation

Window schedules should reference finished-floor elevation when a code or design relationship depends on height.

Clear Opening Is Not Visible Glass

Gentek’s size guide separately reports clear-opening and visible-glass dimensions. The values may look similar, but they serve different purposes.

Clear opening measures the unobstructed space available when an operable sash is opened normally. It is relevant to emergency escape and ventilation analysis.

Visible glass measures the viewable glass area within the frame and sash. It can help with architectural proportion and daylight planning, but it does not establish egress compliance.

Never calculate egress from visible glass

A portion of the visible glass remains inside the frame when the sash opens. Use the manufacturer’s documented net-clear opening for the exact unit.

Custom Sizes Need More Verification, Not Less

A custom size can solve a nonstandard opening, but it can also change performance, egress, glass strength, grid proportions, reinforcement and hardware requirements.

Before approving a custom unit, verify:

  • Exact frame width and height
  • Minimum and maximum manufacturing limits
  • Unified-inch limitations where applicable
  • Glass-strength requirements
  • PG or DP performance for the proposed configuration
  • Net-clear opening if egress matters
  • Grid-layout appearance
  • Lead time and cancellation restrictions

Do not assume that a custom size can be returned or altered after production. Require written approval of the final dimensions.

Plan Dimensions Are Not Final Field Measurements

Architectural drawings communicate design intent. Framing tolerances, substitutions, structural changes and field conditions can alter the actual opening.

Contractors should establish who is responsible for final measurements before the order is placed. That responsibility should be written into the contract or purchase order.

If windows must be ordered before framing is complete, document the risk, verify the structural dimensions and create a process for checking the openings immediately after framing.

AAMA Gold Label Certification Does Not Correct a Size Error

The AAMA Gold Label Certification Program provides third-party verification of qualifying fenestration products.

Certification indicates that the labeled manufactured product is associated with an independently tested design and ongoing quality-assurance program. It does not certify that the contractor measured the opening correctly.

A certified window that is too large, too small or forced into an irregular opening remains an incorrect installation.

InstallationMasters and Rough-Opening Preparation

The FGIA InstallationMasters program provides professional education related to window and exterior glass-door installation.

Proper opening preparation includes more than confirming that the unit physically fits. The opening must support correct flashing, attachment, drainage, shimming and perimeter air sealing.

Installation training should be used with current Gentek instructions, approved project details and locally adopted code requirements.

Sales Tips for Preventing Size Disputes

  1. 1. Label every measurement. Write “rough opening,” “frame size” or “masonry opening” beside every width and height.
  2. 2. Record width before height. Use a consistent format throughout the window schedule.
  3. 3. Identify the measurement owner. State who verified the final field dimensions.
  4. 4. Use room and opening numbers. Do not identify several identical-looking windows only as “front window.”
  5. 5. Attach photographs. Include a measurement reference and avoid relying on photographs alone.
  6. 6. Confirm frame options. J-channel, casing, drywall returns and jamb extensions affect the completed assembly.
  7. 7. Obtain written order approval. Give the customer or contractor an opportunity to review every final size before production.

Popular Owner and Contractor Questions

Is a 3/0 by 5/0 window exactly 36 by 60 inches?

Not necessarily. That is a nominal call size. Use the current Gentek size chart to confirm the actual frame, rough opening and exterior dimensions.

How much larger should the rough opening be?

Use the dimension or formula published for the exact Gentek model. Do not apply a universal clearance rule to every style and configuration.

Does the nailing fin fit inside the rough opening?

No. The nailing fin extends over the exterior face of the wall framing or sheathing as part of the attachment and flashing assembly.

Is the integral J-channel included in the frame size?

Gentek’s guide lists a separate exterior dimension including the J-channel. Confirm which dimension is shown before using it.

Can the installer make a slightly oversized window fit?

Forcing or trimming a manufactured window is not an acceptable correction. The opening or order must be corrected through an approved method.

Can a custom window be changed after it is ordered?

Custom units may enter production quickly and can have cancellation or return restrictions. Treat final written approval as the last opportunity to correct the dimensions.
