Gentek 1900 Series Window Warranty and Homeowner Care Guide
A lifetime limited warranty can provide meaningful protection, but “lifetime” does not mean that every problem, service visit, labor charge or accidental breakage is covered forever. Contractors should explain the written terms before the customer interprets the headline.
Gentek states that its 1900 Series new-construction windows are backed by a lifetime limited warranty. The protection can be valuable, particularly for qualifying manufacturing defects in major window components.
The current written warranty contains eligibility conditions, exclusions, transfer provisions, labor limits and maintenance responsibilities. Products manufactured before its effective date remain subject to the warranty that applied to them, so contractors should retain the document associated with the actual order.
The honest sales rule
Say “lifetime limited warranty,” then explain the limits. Never shorten the description to “lifetime warranty” or “everything is covered for life.”
Start With the Correct Warranty
Gentek’s current window and patio-door warranty states that it applies to qualifying products manufactured on or after March 1, 2025. Products manufactured before that date remain governed by the applicable previous warranty.
This distinction matters because terms can change. A brochure, proposal or warranty downloaded years after installation may not be the controlling document for an older window.
Contractors should save the order acknowledgement, original warranty, product labels, installation date and proof of purchase in the project file. Give the homeowner copies at final handoff.
What “Lifetime Limited” Means
Under Gentek’s current written warranty, qualifying residential coverage is provided to the original purchaser-present property owner for as long as that owner owns and lives in the property. Coverage applies to specified defects in material and workmanship resulting directly from the manufacturing process, subject to the complete terms.
The word “limited” is critical. Coverage is defined by the components, defects, time periods, exclusions and remedies stated in the warranty. The manufacturer decides whether a submitted condition qualifies as a covered claim.
Commercial applications receive different coverage. Under the current warranty, buildings owned by corporations, partnerships, associations, government entities, churches, schools and other non-individual residential owners are subject to a shorter commercial warranty period.
Major Areas Addressed by the Current Warranty
| Component | General Coverage Described | Important Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Vinyl sash and mainframe | Specified manufacturing defects involving cracking, warping, peeling, flaking, blistering or corrosion. | Normal weathering, damage, misuse and excluded outside causes are not treated as manufacturing defects. |
| Moving parts | Specified balances, sliding wheels and locking mechanisms. | Coverage remains subject to normal use, exclusions and environmental limitations. |
| Fiberglass screen and frame | Manufacturing defects resulting in specified rotting or rusting. | Torn screening and accidental damage are not the same as a covered manufacturing defect. |
| Insulating glass unit | Material obstruction of vision between the panes caused by a manufacturing-related failure of the hermetic seal. | Interior surface condensation, exterior condensation and broken glass are different conditions. |
| Factory-applied exterior finish | Specified coating defects and significant qualifying color change for a stated limited period. | Normal weathering, environmental exposure and color variation are subject to the written limits. |
This table is a general summary, not a replacement for the complete warranty. The current written document controls the actual claim.
Glass-Seal Failure Versus Ordinary Condensation
Homeowners frequently use the word “fogging” to describe different conditions. Contractors should first determine where the moisture is located.
Room-Side Condensation
Moisture on the interior surface commonly results when the glass temperature falls below the indoor air’s dew point.
Exterior Condensation
Moisture can form on the outdoor surface during suitable temperature and humidity conditions. It is not necessarily a product defect.
Moisture Between Panes
Persistent film, fog or deposits inside the sealed glass space may indicate insulating-glass seal failure and deserves evaluation.
Gentek’s current warranty states that ordinary condensation, frost or freezing caused by condensation is not covered. It separately addresses qualifying obstruction of vision between the panes resulting from a manufacturing-related hermetic-seal failure.
FGIA explains that indoor condensation is influenced by indoor humidity, outdoor temperature and the interior surface temperature of the window. Condensation-resistance ratings are comparison tools, not guarantees that condensation will never occur.
Glass Breakage Is a Separate Question
The standard current window and patio-door warranty states that it does not cover glass breakage from any cause. Gentek’s warranty page separately lists a glass-breakage warranty, but contractors should not assume that every product, order or glass package receives that additional protection.
Verify whether a separate glass-breakage provision applies to the exact product being sold. If it does, provide its written terms rather than blending it into the standard product warranty.
Impact damage, thermal stress, installation pressure and insulating-glass seal failure are different failure modes. A photograph of cracked glass alone does not determine warranty coverage.
Labor Is Not Automatically Covered for Life
One of the most damaging sales mistakes is telling a homeowner that a lifetime limited warranty includes lifetime labor.
Gentek’s current written warranty provides manufacturer labor for covered repair or replacement work during the first year after installation. After that period, it excludes additional costs associated with removal, replacement, installation or reinstallation of the product or component.
The manufacturer also states that the property owner is responsible for providing reasonable access and may be responsible for scaffolding, lifts or other specialized access equipment.
Contractor policy and manufacturer warranty are separate
A contractor may choose to offer an additional workmanship or service warranty. Put that promise in writing and define its duration, scope, exclusions and service-charge policy. Do not imply that it comes from Gentek unless the manufacturer’s document says so.
Installation Problems Are Not Manufacturing Defects
Gentek’s current warranty states that the manufacturer does not warrant installation or defects caused by installation. Improper installation may void coverage.
Examples of conditions that may be related to installation or the surrounding building include:
- A frame pulled out of square by improper fastening
- Sash binding caused by frame distortion
- Water entering through incomplete flashing
- Air leakage between the frame and rough opening
- Damage caused by building settlement or structural movement
- Blocked drainage paths or weep openings
- Damage from incompatible sealants or construction chemicals
- Excessive localized heat reflected from nearby surfaces
Contractors should diagnose the cause before calling every complaint a warranty claim. Sending an installation problem to the manufacturer wastes time and weakens the homeowner’s trust.
Cleaning Gentek Vinyl Windows Safely
Gentek’s current warranty provides straightforward cleaning guidance. Use mild methods first and avoid aggressive chemicals that may damage glass, vinyl, seals or finishes.
Glass
Clean with mild dish soap and water. Rinse with clean water and dry with a soft cloth. Avoid cleaning hot glass in direct sunlight, and do not use petroleum-based or caustic cleaners.
Vinyl Sashes and Mainframes
Vacuum loose dirt from tracks and sill areas before washing. Use mild, non-abrasive soap and water, rinse thoroughly and wipe dry.
Screens
Remove the screen and place it on a clean, flat surface. Wash gently with mild soap, water and a soft brush. Rinse, dry and reinstall correctly.
Avoid using:
- Solvents or paint removers
- Petroleum-based cleaners
- Caustic or highly concentrated chemicals
- Abrasive particles, pads or powders
- Metal scrapers that can scratch glass or finishes
- Unapproved coatings, paints or surface treatments
Caulk Inspection Is Home Maintenance
Exterior sealants are exposed to movement, sunlight, temperature changes and weather. They should be inspected periodically for cracking, separation or other deterioration.
Gentek’s current warranty identifies caulking used to seal frames or trim packages as a homeowner maintenance issue rather than part of the window product.
Do not respond to every sealant crack by applying another layer over the old material. Determine which joint was intended to be sealed, remove failed material when necessary and use a compatible sealant without blocking drainage paths.
Alterations Can Put Coverage at Risk
The current warranty warns against unauthorized modifications, removal of parts, coatings, treatments and repairs that depart from manufacturer guidelines.
Homeowners should contact the contractor or manufacturer before painting vinyl, drilling the frame, applying aftermarket film, replacing hardware with an unapproved part or disassembling the insulated glass system.
A seemingly minor field alteration can interfere with drainage, structural performance, glass temperature or product operation.
What Happens When the Home Is Sold?
Gentek’s current warranty includes a one-time transfer provision. It states that the original purchaser may transfer coverage to a successor owner within the first 20 years after installation.
Transferred coverage is limited to the unexpired portion of that 20-year period and follows a prorated schedule. It cannot be transferred again.
Because older products may be governed by different transfer terms, confirm the original warranty rather than applying the current schedule retroactively.
How to Prepare a Strong Warranty Claim
- 1. Identify the correct product. Locate the product label or serial-number information and confirm the window style and installation location.
- 2. Document the condition. Take clear photographs of the entire window, affected component and surrounding installation.
- 3. Describe symptoms accurately. State where moisture appears, when binding occurs or which component failed. Avoid diagnosing the cause before inspection.
- 4. Gather project records. Include proof of purchase, installation date, contractor name, property ownership and transfer information when applicable.
- 5. Submit promptly. Gentek instructs owners to submit claims promptly after discovering the claimed defect.
- 6. Preserve the product. Do not discard, disassemble or alter the affected component before the manufacturer has an opportunity to inspect it.
AAMA Gold Label Certification Does Not Expand the Warranty
The AAMA Gold Label Certification Program provides third-party verification for qualifying fenestration products. FGIA states that certified samples undergo independent testing and that ongoing factory inspections help confirm continued compliance with applicable standards.
Certification supports confidence in documented product performance. It does not convert maintenance, breakage, condensation or installation problems into covered warranty claims. Certification and warranty coverage answer different questions.
Installation Quality Protects the Product and Contractor
Accurate openings, correct flashing, proper fastening and compatible sealants reduce service problems that fall outside the manufacturer’s responsibility. Photograph important installation stages before they are concealed.
The FGIA InstallationMasters program provides professional education related to window and exterior glass-door installation. Contractors should combine sound installation practices with current Gentek instructions, approved project details and local code.
Popular Homeowner Questions
Does lifetime coverage include lifetime labor?
No. Under the current written warranty, manufacturer labor for qualifying warranted work is limited to the first year after installation.
Is condensation on the room side covered?
Ordinary surface condensation is generally related to temperature, humidity and dew point. The current warranty excludes condensation, frost and freezing caused by condensation.
Is fog between the panes covered?
A material obstruction of vision between the panes caused by a qualifying manufacturing-related hermetic-seal failure may be covered, subject to the complete terms and claim evaluation.
Will Gentek replace accidentally broken glass?
The standard current warranty excludes glass breakage. Verify whether a separate written glass-breakage warranty applies to the exact order.
Will a replacement part match an older window exactly?
Not necessarily. Weathering, product changes and discontinued components can create color or design differences. The warranty permits compatible substitutions in certain circumstances.
Can I paint my vinyl windows?
Do not apply paint, coatings, films or treatments without written manufacturer approval. Unauthorized alterations can void coverage or damage the product.
