However, no responsible contractor should describe a residential replacement window as “soundproof.” Acoustic performance depends on the exact glass construction, frame, operator type, weather seals, installation perimeter, wall and character of the noise.
Begin by Identifying the Noise
“The house is noisy” is not enough information to specify a window. Sound varies by frequency, duration, direction and intensity. High-pitched voices, tire noise, aircraft, train horns and low-frequency truck engines do not pass through a building in identical ways.
Ask when the problem occurs, which rooms are affected and whether the sound seems to enter through the glass, operating joints, wall, roof, vents or doors. Stand in the room while the source is active whenever practical.
A product recommendation made without identifying the source is speculation. Replacing windows may help, but it may not address the dominant transmission path.

Nearby walls, doors, soffits, vents, fireplace openings and attic assemblies may transmit sound as well. Noise heard near a window is not proof that the window is the only source.
Understanding STC
Sound Transmission Class, or STC, is a single-number classification derived from sound-transmission-loss data over a defined frequency range. ASTM E413 provides a classification method for rating sound insulation.
A higher STC generally indicates greater resistance to airborne sound within the frequencies emphasized by the classification. STC is widely used for interior partitions and can be useful when comparing tested fenestration products.
STC should not be treated as a complete prediction of traffic, aircraft or other exterior noise. Two products with similar STC values can perform differently at individual frequencies, especially toward the lower end of the spectrum.
Understanding OITC
Outdoor-Indoor Transmission Class, or OITC, is another single-number classification. It was developed with exterior environmental sound in mind and includes lower-frequency considerations relevant to transportation noise.
When a homeowner’s complaint involves road, rail or aircraft noise, OITC may be more relevant than an STC value alone. That does not mean OITC predicts the exact number of decibels a particular homeowner will perceive after installation.

Glass has frequency ranges where its sound-reduction effectiveness decreases. When two panes have identical thicknesses, their acoustic weaknesses may occur in similar ranges.
Using panes of different thicknesses can shift those weaknesses so both panes are less likely to lose effectiveness at the same frequencies. This is why an asymmetric insulated-glass unit may provide better sound control than a symmetric assembly with a similar pane count.
The correct configuration must still be supported by testing. “Different thicknesses are always better” is too broad because airspace, frame, seals and the complete assembly also affect performance.
What Laminated Glass Can Add
Laminated glass typically bonds glass layers around an interlayer. The interlayer can damp some vibration and improve acoustic performance at certain frequencies. Laminated glass also has safety and post-breakage characteristics that differ from standard annealed glass.
It should not be promised as a universal soundproofing solution. Acoustic results depend on laminate construction, pane thickness, airspace and complete-window design.

Double-Pane vs. Triple-Pane for Sound

Picture windows do not contain a movable sash. This eliminates operating joints that must permit movement and can make a fixed unit easier to seal against air and sound.
Casement windows close against compression seals, while double-hung and sliding windows use seals that allow sash movement. Operator type can therefore affect acoustic and air-leakage performance.

“You will never hear the train again.”
