Energy efficiency is an important consideration during an exterior renovation, particularly when an older wall is already being opened or re-covered. Unfortunately, siding terminology is often used loosely. Thin backers may be called insulation, polymer cladding may be confused with insulated vinyl siding and untested thermal claims may be repeated without supporting documents.

A homeowner should not have to accept a vague claim. A legitimate R-value is measurable, product-specific and documented.

The right question is not simply, “Does this siding save energy?” The better question is, “Which exact component has a tested R-value, what is that value and how will it function in my complete wall?”

What Is an R-Value?

R-value is a measure of resistance to heat flow. In general, a higher R-value indicates greater resistance under the applicable test conditions.

R-value should not be treated as a decorative marketing number. The Federal Trade Commission regulates insulation R-value claims, and industry guidance from the Polymeric Exterior Products Association explains that claimed insulation values must be supported by prescribed testing.

The value should apply to an identified product in a defined configuration. A salesperson cannot responsibly transfer an R-value from one insulated product to a different, non-insulated cladding simply because both products are described as siding.

How PEPA Classifies Polymeric Siding Products

The Polymeric Exterior Products Association, which owns the VSI Product Certification Program, distinguishes among several types of polymeric cladding. These categories should not be treated as interchangeable.

Gentek identifies Fairhaven Sound as polypropylene siding. The product’s primary documented role is exterior cladding with cedar-inspired texture—not tested home insulation.

What Makes Insulated Siding Different?

PEPA states that insulated vinyl siding is tested in accordance with ASTM D7793, a standard that includes requirements for the vinyl component, the foam component and the product as a whole.

Thermal testing is used to establish a product-specific R-value. Once that value has been determined for a certified insulated-siding product, PEPA explains that it must be displayed on the packaging.

A credible insulated-siding claim should identify:

• The exact manufacturer and product line
• The applicable product standard or test method
• The tested R-value
• The configuration to which the value applies
• Product labeling or certification supporting the claim
• Installation requirements necessary for the product to function as intended

Why Fairhaven Sound Should Not Be Marketed as Insulated Siding

Fairhaven Sound’s documented strengths are aesthetic character, polypropylene construction, cedar texture, varied mold patterns, coordinated colors, panel-locking features and weather-related performance.

Those benefits are meaningful without attaching an unsupported insulation claim. Giving the product an invented or borrowed R-value would create three problems:

1. It confuses product categories. Polypropylene shakes and certified insulated vinyl siding are not the same type of product.
2. It obscures the real insulation plan. Homeowners may believe the wall is being improved when no documented insulation has been specified.
3. It makes performance impossible to verify. A homeowner cannot confirm an R-value that is absent from the manufacturer’s product information.

Can Insulation Be Installed Behind Gentek Shakes?

Polypropylene siding can be used as the exterior cladding over separately specified continuous insulation when the complete assembly is properly designed.

PEPA explains that polypropylene and other polymeric claddings can be installed with continuous-insulation products such as rigid foam sheathing. Its 2026 construction-detail guidance addresses polymeric cladding over several continuous-insulation thicknesses.

Compatibility in principle does not mean every product can be combined in any manner. The wall must still satisfy the Gentek instructions, insulation-manufacturer requirements, fastening provisions, drainage details and code applicable to the project.

Where Does the R-Value Belong?

Adding continuous insulation increases the thickness of the exterior wall. That affects more than energy calculations.

Gentek shakes are often selected for prominent gables and other architectural accents. If added insulation changes the wall depth, the project team must reconsider the visual relationship among the shakes, trim, windows, masonry and roof edges.

• Window and door surrounds may need added depth.
• Corner and transition trim may need revised dimensions.
• Lights, outlets and vents may require appropriate mounting blocks.
• Roof-to-wall and masonry transitions may need new flashing details.
• Fasteners must reach the required supporting material.

These details should be resolved before materials are ordered. Otherwise, a legitimate insulation improvement can leave the finished façade looking unnecessarily bulky or improvised.

Do Not Confuse R-Value with Energy Savings

R-value describes resistance to heat flow under specified conditions. It does not directly predict a household’s utility bill.

Actual energy use is influenced by the entire home, including:

• Attic and foundation insulation
• Air leakage
• Windows and doors
• Heating and cooling equipment
• Thermostat settings and occupant behavior
• Weather during the billing period

A contractor can document the R-value of installed insulation. A fixed percentage of future savings requires a much broader, project-specific analysis.

Questions to Ask When an R-Value Is Claimed

1. Which exact product has the claimed R-value?
2. Is the value published by the product manufacturer?
3. What testing or standard supports the value?
4. Is the value shown on the product packaging or certification documents?
5. Does the value apply to the siding, attached insulation or a separate foam layer?
6. What thickness and installation configuration were tested?
7. How will the insulation remain continuous at corners and openings?
8. How will the Gentek shakes be fastened through or over the insulation?
9. Which current code and manufacturer requirements apply?

Red Flags in an Insulation Proposal

• The proposal calls every foam backing “insulated siding.”
• The R-value is not tied to an exact product and thickness.
• A value from one product line is applied to a different siding product.
• The contractor cannot provide a technical data sheet or package label.
• The proposal promises a fixed utility-bill reduction based only on new siding.
• No one has addressed flashing, drainage or window depth.
• The fastening plan does not account for the added insulation thickness.
