Five Questions That Help Identify the Perfect Steel Siding Customer | Suburban Wholesale Contractor Academy

Not every siding customer is a steel siding customer. These five discovery questions help contractors identify homeowners who may value SteelTek Supreme's premium metal construction, finish, profile options, warranty protection and long-term exterior performance.

Five Questions That Help Identify the Perfect Steel Siding Customer

Not every homeowner who asks for a siding estimate should automatically be presented with steel as the first recommendation.

But contractors should also be careful not to eliminate steel before the homeowner ever sees it.

The better approach is discovery.

Ask questions that help uncover how the homeowner thinks about appearance, long-term ownership, maintenance, weather exposure and investment.

Those answers can tell you whether it makes sense to introduce a premium metal option such as Gentek SteelTek Supreme® Steel Siding.

At Suburban Wholesale & Supply, we encourage contractors to qualify steel customers by listening rather than guessing. The house does not tell you whether someone wants steel. The homeowner does.

Do Not Try to Identify a Steel Customer by Looking at the House

A large home does not automatically mean the customer will buy steel.

A smaller home does not automatically mean they will not.

Contractors can lose premium sales when they make assumptions based on:

  • The size of the house
  • The neighborhood
  • The customer's vehicle
  • The age of the home
  • The fact that they originally asked about vinyl

None of those things tells you what the homeowner actually values. Ask better questions instead.

Question #1: “How Long Do You Plan to Stay in This Home?”

This is one of the first questions that can uncover a possible steel customer.

A homeowner planning to sell in two years may evaluate siding differently from someone who says:

"We're staying here for the rest of our lives."

Long-term homeowners may place greater importance on:

Long-Term Appearance

They may care more about choosing the exterior they really want rather than simply completing the repair.

Long-Term Ownership

Product construction and written warranty coverage may become more meaningful when the homeowner expects to remain in the property.

Long-Term Investment

They may be more willing to consider an upgrade if they expect to enjoy the exterior for many years.

A useful follow-up is:

"Since you're planning to stay here long term, would you like me to show you the premium siding options too?"

That is a natural opening for steel.

Question #2: “Besides Price, What Is Most Important to You in New Siding?”

Almost every homeowner cares about price.

The important question is what else matters.

Listen for answers such as:

  • Durability
  • Long-term appearance
  • Low maintenance
  • Weather protection
  • Hail concerns
  • Color retention
  • Warranty protection
  • A more substantial exterior

If several of those priorities come up, steel deserves to be shown.

Gentek describes SteelTek Supreme as heavy-duty Galvalume® AZ-50 steel with a Kynar® PVDF coating system designed around strength, weatherability and long-term exterior appearance.

That does not mean steel automatically wins the sale. It means the product has characteristics directly related to what the homeowner just told you matters.

Question #3: “Have You Had Problems With Hail, Wind or Severe Weather?”

This question can be especially relevant throughout Eastern Iowa, Western Illinois and the Quad Cities.

You are not trying to scare the homeowner.

You are learning what experiences shaped their buying priorities.

Listen for comments such as:

  • "We've replaced siding after hail before."
  • "This side of the house gets hammered by storms."
  • "We want something substantial."
  • "We don't want to go through this again."

If weather exposure is a major concern, steel is worth introducing and the written warranty becomes particularly relevant.

Gentek's current SteelTek Supreme warranty resources identify lifetime limited coverage along with specific hail, chalk and color-change provisions.

Use the actual written warranty when discussing those protections rather than making broad claims such as "hail proof" or "storm proof."

Question #4: “How Important Is the Finished Appearance of the House?”

Steel should not be sold only as a durability product.

It is also an exterior design choice.

SteelTek Supreme currently gives contractors several profile options, including:

D4 Clapboard

Traditional horizontal scale.

D5 Clapboard

A broader horizontal appearance.

8" Single

Wide horizontal exposure with a different architectural scale.

12" Board & Batten

Vertical option for architectural accents or larger vertical applications.

The current profile lineup can be reviewed directly on the Gentek SteelTek Supreme product page.

If the homeowner says:

"We want this house to look dramatically better."

do not immediately reduce the conversation to material thickness or warranty language.

Show profiles. Show colors. Show completed projects. Help them design the exterior first.

Question #5: “If You Saw a Product You Preferred, Would You Consider Investing More?”

This is the question that helps determine whether the homeowner is open to premium options.

Do not ask:

"Can you afford steel?"

Ask whether they are willing to evaluate value.

"If I showed you another siding system that you genuinely preferred, would you want to know what the upgrade costs?"

If they say yes, show steel.

Put it beside the vinyl sample.

Let them hold it.

Show the finish.

Show the profiles.

Show the warranty.

Then price the upgrade and let them decide whether those differences are worth the additional investment.

What Does a Strong Steel Customer Sound Like?

You are listening for a pattern—not one magic answer.

What the Homeowner Says What It May Tell You Your Next Move
"We're staying here forever." Long-term ownership matters. Show premium options and written warranties.
"I don't want to do this again." Durability and long-term ownership may be major priorities. Introduce SteelTek Supreme construction.
"We've had hail damage before." Written weather-related coverage may matter. Show the actual Gentek warranty.
"We want the house to look completely different." Design and profile choice matter. Show D4, D5, 8" and Board & Batten options.
"Show us everything." The homeowner is open to comparison. Build a good-better-best presentation.

What Does a Weak Steel Lead Sound Like?

Not every customer needs the entire presentation.

If the homeowner repeatedly tells you:

  • "We only care about the lowest price."
  • "We are selling the house immediately."
  • "We do not want to look at upgrades."
  • "Just quote exactly what we already have."

you probably do not need a 20-minute steel presentation.

You can still briefly say:

"We also offer steel siding if you ever want to compare a premium metal option."

Then respect the homeowner's answer and move on.

Do Not Confuse a Steel Prospect With a Steel Sale

Identifying a homeowner who may like steel is only the beginning.

The contractor still has to demonstrate it properly.

Once you identify a strong prospect:

  1. Ask permission to show steel.
  2. Put steel beside the other siding options.
  3. Let the homeowner handle the sample.
  4. Explain the construction simply.
  5. Show profiles and colors.
  6. Show actual warranty documentation.
  7. Use photographs or visualization.
  8. Present the installed upgrade price.
  9. Ask which product they prefer.

Discovery identifies the opportunity. Demonstration builds the value.

Never Make the Homeowner's Financial Decision

This is one of the most important lessons in premium siding sales.

Contractors sometimes assume:

  • "They'll never spend that much."
  • "This neighborhood isn't a steel neighborhood."
  • "They asked for vinyl, so don't bother."

That thinking guarantees the homeowner will not buy steel because you never gave them the opportunity.

Qualify based on priorities. Present the option. Explain the investment clearly. Then let the homeowner decide.

Use a Simple Steel Customer Scorecard

Contractors can make this easy for their salespeople.

Long-Term Owner
Values Durability
Weather Concerns
Design Focused
Open to Upgrades

The more boxes the homeowner checks, the more reason you have to include steel in the presentation.

This is not a rigid qualification formula. It is simply a reminder for salespeople to listen for the characteristics that make a premium metal-cladding discussion relevant.

Practice the Questions Until They Sound Natural

Do not interrogate the homeowner.

These questions should be part of a normal conversation.

A simple flow could sound like:

"How long do you see yourself staying here?"
"Besides price, what matters most to you in the new siding?"
"Have you had any issues with hail or severe weather?"
"How much do you want to change the appearance of the house?"
"If you saw an option you liked better, would you want me to price that upgrade too?"

In five questions, you may know far more about how to structure the rest of the appointment.
