Gentek 1900 Series High-Performance Windows for Coastal and Stringent-Code Projects

Gentek offers high-performance 1900 Series configurations for projects with demanding local building requirements, including selected coastal markets. That does not make every 1900 Series window impact-resistant, hurricane-rated or approved for every coastal jurisdiction.

Gentek describes its 1900 Series new-construction windows as having high-performance model options for stringent local building codes, including many coastal markets.

This is a product-availability statement, not a blanket approval. The required window must be selected by exact model, style, size, glass, reinforcement, mull configuration, rating, approval and installation method.

The coastal-specification rule

Never order a “coastal window.” Order an exact documented configuration whose test reports and approvals satisfy the written requirements for the specific opening.

“High Performance” Is Not a Complete Specification

The term high performance can refer to increased structural capability, water resistance, reduced air leakage, specialized glass, reinforcement or another upgraded feature. It does not communicate the exact required values.

A complete project requirement may include:

  • Performance Class and Performance Grade
  • Positive design pressure
  • Negative design pressure
  • Water penetration resistance test pressure
  • Maximum air-leakage value
  • Wind-borne-debris impact requirements
  • Product approval or evaluation-report number
  • Maximum approved size
  • Glass and reinforcement requirements
  • Opening-specific anchorage
  • Approved substrate and edge distances

If the project documents provide only the phrase “coastal-rated windows,” request clarification before quoting.

Performance Grade and Design Pressure

Performance Grade, or PG, indicates that a product met the applicable design pressure and the other performance requirements associated with the governing fenestration standard.

Design Pressure, or DP, relates to the pressure the window is designed and tested to resist under specified conditions. The required project pressure is determined through building-code or engineering calculations.

Do not convert a DP value into a universal miles-per-hour claim. Wind pressure depends on building height, exposure, topography, risk category, opening location, wall zone and other project variables.

A window near a building corner can have a different required pressure from an identical-size window near the center of the wall.

Positive and Negative Pressure Both Matter

Wind can push toward one portion of a building while creating suction on another surface. Window documentation may therefore include both positive and negative pressure values.

A product that satisfies the required inward pressure must also satisfy the required outward or suction pressure for that opening. Contractors should not quote only the more favorable direction.

FGIA reports that the 2026 North American Fenestration Standard makes the secondary designator mandatory on product test reports and labels. The secondary information includes positive design pressure, negative design pressure and water penetration resistance test pressure.

Code adoption follows its own schedule. The publication of NAFS-26 does not mean that every jurisdiction immediately requires that edition.

Water Resistance Is Not the Same as Structural Pressure

Structural pressure testing and water penetration resistance testing evaluate different performance characteristics. A strong structural number does not automatically establish the project’s required water-test pressure.

This distinction matters in hurricane-prone and coastal regions, where wind-driven rain can produce severe water exposure even when the window remains structurally intact.

Review the documented water-test pressure for the exact configuration. Then ensure the field flashing and drainage system around the window support the product’s performance.

High PG or DP Does Not Prove Impact Resistance

A window can have strong air, water and structural performance without being tested for wind-borne-debris impact.

Impact-resistant assemblies are evaluated under separate procedures involving missile impact and pressure cycling. The exact frame, glass, glazing retention, reinforcement, hardware and anchorage form part of the tested system.

Laminated Glass Is Not Automatically Hurricane Glass

Laminated glass uses a bonded interlayer that can retain fragments after breakage. It may be used for safety, sound, security or impact applications, depending on the certified construction.

Gentek’s historical 1900 Series specifications identify a laminated option as non-impact laminated glass. This is an important warning against treating every laminated configuration as hurricane rated.

If impact resistance is required, obtain documentation naming the exact window model, glass construction, size and approved installation.

Product Approval Must Match the Exact Window

Coastal jurisdictions may require a state, county or other recognized product approval. The approval generally includes conditions and limitations rather than granting unrestricted use of an entire product family.

Check the approval for:

  • Manufacturer and product-series name
  • Exact operating style
  • Maximum frame dimensions
  • Glass construction and thickness
  • Reinforcement requirements
  • Positive and negative design pressures
  • Impact or non-impact classification
  • Approved substrates
  • Fastener type, diameter, spacing and embedment
  • Required edge distances
  • Mull and combination limitations

A model number appearing somewhere in an approval does not mean every possible size and option under that model is approved.

Window Size Can Change the Rating

Larger windows generally experience greater total force at the same pressure. Frame deflection, glass strength, sash reinforcement and hardware loads can therefore change with size.

A rating obtained on one tested size should not be transferred casually to a larger unit. Use current performance data, certification rules and approval limits for the proposed window.

Custom sizing may also affect glass type, reinforcement, egress opening and available colors or grids. Confirm the complete configuration before quoting.

Mulled Combinations Require Their Own Review

Two individually rated windows do not automatically create a combination with the same rating. The mull becomes a structural connection exposed to the combined opening load.

Gentek offers a metal-reinforced mulling system for selected 1900 Series combinations. Gentek states that the reinforcement increases rigidity and strength at mull intersections and includes a drip cap intended to direct water away from the mullion.

Confirm that the exact twin, triple or other configuration has the required performance documentation. Field-mulling details should not be substituted for a factory-tested assembly without approval.

Anchorage Is Part of the Approved System

The window’s pressure capability must be transferred through its frame and fasteners into the building structure. Fastener selection and spacing are therefore engineering and approval issues—not installation preferences.

Changing any of the following can invalidate the intended load path:

  • Fastener material or diameter
  • Fastener spacing
  • Embedment depth
  • Distance from the substrate edge
  • Wood species or framing thickness
  • Concrete or masonry strength
  • Use of a wood buck
  • Shim locations
  • Approved fin or frame-anchor locations

Adding random fasteners is not a substitute for following the approved schedule. Extra penetrations can also damage the frame or flashing.

Coastal Corrosion and Hardware Exposure

Salt-laden air can accelerate corrosion of exposed metal components. Window selection should account for hardware, fasteners, screens, anchors and other materials—not only the vinyl frame.

Gentek’s current warranty includes limitations for natural weathering or corrosion of hardware and screens in highly corrosive environments, including areas close to coastlines.

Confirm maintenance requirements and environmental limitations before making a durability promise. “Vinyl does not rust” does not mean that every component in the window is unaffected by salt exposure.

Coastal Water Management Extends Beyond the Window

A high-performance window can still leak around its perimeter if the sill pan, flashing, drainage plane or sealant joints are incorrectly detailed.

Coastal and hurricane-prone projects may experience intense wind-driven rain. The opening should be designed to manage incidental water reaching concealed layers and direct it back outside.

Do not rely on an exposed sealant bead as the only water-control layer. Sealant can age, lose adhesion or be damaged while the underlying drainage system remains essential.

AAMA Gold Label Certification

The AAMA Gold Label Certification Program provides third-party verification for qualifying fenestration products.

FGIA explains that a certified sample undergoes independent laboratory testing for prescribed air leakage, water penetration, structural resistance and applicable durability requirements. Ongoing factory inspections help confirm that production continues to match the tested design or approved modifications.

The Gold Label is valuable documentation, but it does not replace a required impact approval, engineering calculation or opening-specific anchor schedule.

InstallationMasters and High-Wind Installation

The FGIA InstallationMasters program provides professional training and certification related to window and exterior glass-door installation.

Training can strengthen an installer’s understanding of opening preparation, flashing, fastening, shimming and air sealing. High-wind projects still require strict compliance with the exact approved installation.

Experience with ordinary residential windows does not authorize an installer to revise an engineered coastal anchorage schedule.
