Gentek 1900 Series Safety Glazing: Tempered, Laminated and Impact Glass Explained

Safety glazing is selected because of the window’s installed location and applicable code—not simply because the window is large, located in a bedroom or part of the Gentek 1900 Series. Contractors must identify hazardous locations before the windows are released for production.

Gentek’s published specifications identify tempered and laminated insulated glass among the potential options for 1900 Series new-construction windows . Availability can depend on style, size, glass package and manufacturing limitations.

Neither option should be selected from its name alone. Tempered glass, laminated glass, heat-strengthened glass and impact-resistant glazing can serve different purposes and are not automatically interchangeable.

The critical ordering rule

Mark every potential hazardous location on the plans, verify the locally adopted code and specify the required certified safety-glazing configuration before ordering. A field-applied film is not an automatic correction for incorrectly ordered glass.

What Is Safety Glazing?

Safety glazing is designed and tested to reduce the risk of severe injury when people accidentally impact or break the glazing. Depending on the material and construction, it may break into smaller particles, remain adhered to an interlayer or otherwise meet applicable impact-test requirements.

Federal requirements under 16 CFR Part 1201 establish safety requirements for architectural glazing used in specified products such as doors, bathtub and shower enclosures, and sliding patio doors. Building codes identify additional hazardous glazing locations.

Safety-glazing products normally carry a permanent marking that identifies compliance with the applicable standard. That mark should not be removed, covered or replaced with a contractor-created label.

Tempered Glass

Tempered glass is heat-treated to change its strength and breakage behavior. When properly manufactured tempered glass breaks, it is designed to fracture into relatively small particles instead of large, sharp shards typical of ordinary annealed glass.

Tempered glass is commonly used to satisfy safety-glazing requirements when the exact product has the required certification. It must be cut, drilled, edged and otherwise fabricated before tempering.

Contractors cannot safely trim tempered glass at the jobsite. Attempting to cut or modify it will generally cause the pane to shatter.

Tempered does not mean unbreakable

Tempered glass can still break from impact, edge damage, severe stress or other causes. Its safety benefit concerns tested strength and breakage behavior—not immunity from damage.

Laminated Glass

Laminated glass consists of two or more pieces of glass bonded to an intervening resilient layer. When the glass breaks, fragments can remain attached to the interlayer.

A laminated configuration may be designed for safety glazing, sound control, security-related performance, ultraviolet filtering or impact resistance. Those functions should never be assumed from the word “laminated.”

The specific laminated assembly must be certified for the required application. Gentek’s older 1900 Series size guide identifies a laminated option as non-impact laminated glass, reinforcing that laminated and hurricane-impact glazing are not synonymous.

Tempered, Laminated and Impact-Resistant Glass Compared

Common Hazardous Glazing Locations

Model building codes identify locations where human impact with glass is more likely or could produce serious injury. Common categories include:

  • Glazing in swinging, sliding and bifold doors
  • Glazing beside certain doors
  • Large, low glazing near walking surfaces
  • Glazing near bathtubs, showers, pools, hot tubs and similar wet areas
  • Glazing near stairs, ramps and landings
  • Glazing adjacent to stairways where a person could fall against it
  • Glazing used as guards or railings

Each category includes measurements, conditions and exceptions. A visual impression that a window “looks close enough” is not a code analysis.

Large, Low Windows Near Walking Surfaces

Model residential codes commonly treat a window as a hazardous location when all specified conditions are present. These conditions typically consider:

  • The size of an individual exposed glass pane
  • The height of the pane’s lower edge above the floor
  • The height of the pane’s upper edge above the floor
  • The horizontal distance from the glass to a walking surface

Under commonly adopted IRC provisions, frequently referenced thresholds include a pane larger than 9 square feet, a lower edge less than 18 inches above the floor, an upper edge more than 36 inches above the floor and a walking surface within 36 inches horizontally. The exact adopted text, exceptions and measurement method must be verified locally.

All listed conditions matter

A large pane is not automatically hazardous under this category, and a low pane is not automatically exempt. Check every condition and every applicable code section.

Windows Near Doors

Glass near a door can be vulnerable to accidental human impact because people may mistake the glazing for an opening, fall against it or contact it while operating the door.

Model codes commonly establish hazardous zones beside doors based on the distance from the door and the glass height above the walking surface. Exceptions may apply for intervening walls or barriers and certain door configurations.

Measure the actual relationship between the window, door and walking surface. A plan-note reading “window next to door” does not contain enough information to determine the glass requirement.

Bathrooms, Tubs, Showers and Wet Areas

Bathrooms do not automatically require every window to have safety glazing. The requirement depends on the window’s relationship to a bathtub, shower, spa, hot tub, pool or similar area.

Model codes commonly consider the horizontal or vertical distance between the glazing and the standing or walking surface serving the wet area. A window located within the defined zone may require safety glazing even if it is relatively high on the wall.

Obtain the final tub, shower and platform dimensions before ordering. Substituting a larger tub or moving the shower enclosure can change the window’s code relationship.

Windows Near Stairs and Landings

Glazing near stairs, ramps and landings can present a serious fall hazard. Model codes include specific zones measured from walking surfaces, stair bottoms, landings and adjacent areas.

The final stair geometry matters. Changes to tread layout, landing height, guard construction or floor elevation can move the glass into or out of a regulated zone.

Do not approve the glass schedule before coordinating architectural and stair drawings. If the condition is unclear, obtain direction from the designer or authority having jurisdiction.

Safety Glazing Is Not Fall Protection

Safety glazing addresses the consequences of human impact with glass. It does not necessarily prevent a person from falling through an open window.

Guards, window-opening control devices and fall-prevention requirements are separate code issues. Gentek’s current warranty expressly states that its products are not represented or warranted as suitable for fall prevention.

Insect screens are also not fall-prevention devices. A screen intended to keep insects out should never be presented as protection for a child or adult near an open window.

Safety Glazing Is Not Hurricane Impact Protection

Safety glazing is tested to reduce injury from human contact. Hurricane-impact assemblies are evaluated under separate requirements involving debris impact, pressure cycling and the complete window system.

Adding ordinary laminated safety glass to a standard window does not automatically create an approved impact-resistant assembly. Frame design, glass construction, glazing retention, hardware, reinforcement, anchors, size and installation all form part of the approved system.

Where impact protection is required, specify the exact tested and approved product rather than attempting to upgrade a standard unit through a single glass substitution.

Can Aftermarket Film Make Ordinary Glass Code Compliant?

An aftermarket film should not be assumed to convert ordinary glass into compliant safety glazing. The complete film-and-glass assembly, application, labeling and installation would need to satisfy the applicable requirements and receive acceptance from the authority having jurisdiction.

Film can also affect glass temperature, thermal stress, appearance and product warranty. Gentek’s current warranty restricts unauthorized coatings, treatments and alterations.

The reliable solution is to order the correct certified glass from the factory.

Safety-Glazing Marks Must Remain Visible

Safety glazing generally carries a permanent manufacturer or certification marking identifying the material and applicable standard. Inspectors may rely on that mark when verifying compliance.

Before installation, confirm that the required mark is present and that its orientation will remain observable. Do not polish, scrape, paint over or conceal it.

A paper shipping label or handwritten note is not a substitute for the required permanent safety-glazing identification.

AAMA Gold Label Certification and Safety Glass Labels

The AAMA Gold Label Certification Program provides third-party verification for qualifying fenestration products under applicable performance standards.

An AAMA Gold Label is not the same as a safety-glazing mark. The Gold Label relates to the certified window product, while the permanent glass mark identifies compliance of the glazing material with the applicable safety standard.

A project may require both forms of documentation, along with an NFRC label or other code-approval information.

Installation Must Preserve the Certified Assembly

Safety glass still requires correct handling. Edge damage, frame distortion, incorrect setting conditions or unauthorized field modifications can create breakage risk and jeopardize the approved configuration.
