A “lifetime warranty” does not mean every problem, expense or future owner is covered forever. Learn how contractors should explain Gentek window coverage, glass-breakage limitations, labor, transferability and claim documentation.

Gentek Signature Elite Window Warranty: What Contractors and Homeowners Need to Document
Gentek replacement windows are promoted with limited-warranty protection, but the phrase “lifetime warranty” is often misunderstood. It does not mean every kind of damage, service visit, labor charge or future owner is covered forever. Coverage depends on the warranty issued for the product, installation date, property type, ownership, component, cause of failure and claim documentation. Contractors should provide the actual warranty—not a verbal summary that quietly expands it.
What “Lifetime Limited” Actually Means
“Lifetime” typically describes the duration offered to a defined eligible owner under the written terms. “Limited” is equally important. It identifies covered products, components, defects, remedies, exclusions and owner responsibilities.
A published Gentek replacement-window warranty effective June 1, 2019, for example, provides specified coverage to the original purchaser while that person owns and lives in the property. It separately addresses vinyl frames, moving parts, screens, insulating-glass units, factory-applied exterior finishes, labor and transferability.
Contractors should never shorten this to “everything is covered for life.” That statement removes the limitations that define the warranty and may create an obligation the manufacturer never accepted.
Product Warranty, Glass-Breakage Warranty and Installation Warranty
| Coverage Type | General Purpose | Important Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer product warranty | Addresses specified manufacturing defects in covered window components | Does not automatically cover installation errors, accidents or every field condition |
| Glass-breakage warranty | May provide a replacement sealed-glass unit when eligible glass breaks or cracks | Published terms exclude multiple product types and expenses, including installation |
| Contractor installation warranty | Addresses workmanship according to the contractor’s written agreement | Duration and remedies depend on the contractor’s own contract—not Gentek’s product warranty |
These warranties can work together, but they are not interchangeable. A manufacturer may supply a covered component while labor remains the homeowner’s or contractor’s responsibility. An installation defect may belong to the installer even when the window itself has no manufacturing defect.
Common Components Addressed by Gentek’s Published Replacement Warranty
The published 2019 Gentek replacement-window and patio-door warranty describes coverage for several component categories. The actual project warranty must be reviewed because durations and terms can differ.
Vinyl sash and mainframe
The document addresses specified manufacturing-related conditions such as cracking, warping, peeling, flaking, blistering or corroding under its stated terms.
Moving parts
Balances, sliding wheels and locking mechanisms are identified as covered components for eligible original-owner applications under that warranty.
Screens and screen frames
Coverage addresses specified manufacturing defects in screen and frame materials. It should not be presented as insurance against every tear, puncture or impact.
Insulated-glass units
The document addresses material obstruction of vision between interior glass surfaces caused by a manufacturing-related hermetic-seal failure.
Factory-applied exterior finishes
Separate duration and performance provisions apply to qualifying factory-applied exterior coatings. Natural weathering and slight color change should not automatically be labeled a defect.
Initial labor
The published replacement warranty includes a limited initial labor provision for warranted work, followed by owner responsibility for later removal, installation and related labor costs.
Seal Failure Is Not the Same as Broken Glass
An insulated-glass seal claim generally concerns fog, film or dust between the panes resulting from failure of the sealed assembly. Glass breakage concerns a pane that has physically cracked or broken.
Those conditions may be governed by different warranty provisions. Gentek’s published general replacement-window warranty states that ordinary glass breakage is not covered unless applicable glass-breakage coverage was issued.
Contractors should document whether the complaint involves interior condensation, exterior condensation, fog between the panes, a visible crack, impact damage or thermal stress. Calling every cloudy window “broken glass” can send the claim down the wrong path.
Understand the Glass-Breakage Warranty Before Selling It
Gentek’s published glass-breakage warranty effective February 1, 2021, states that it will provide a new sealed-glass unit for qualifying breakage or cracking while the original purchaser owns and lives in the eligible property. The homeowner remains responsible for stated shipping, handling and installation expenses.
That document also contains important exclusions. It limits coverage to the original purchaser, is not transferable and applies to qualifying single-family residential units. Its listed exclusions include patio doors, tempered units, special shapes, garden-window bent glass, beveled or grooved glass, laminated glass, oversized units, certain property types and specified events.
Existing Suburban Wholesale coverage of windows with glass-breakage warranties provides an introduction to the benefit. This article takes the separate contractor-documentation approach: verify that the rider applies to the exact product before using it as a closing point.
Transferability Requires Careful Explanation
Transferability can add resale value, but it should not be described as an unrestricted lifetime benefit for every future owner. Gentek’s published 2019 replacement warranty provides for a single transfer within a defined period and limits the transferred coverage to the remaining portion of a stated term.
That document also contains a prorated owner-share schedule for certain transferred-warranty obligations. The subsequent owner may therefore receive different coverage than the original purchaser.
The safest sales statement is: “The current warranty may include limited transfer provisions; review the document for deadlines, procedures, remaining term and prorated costs.” Do not simply say, “The warranty follows the house.”
Conditions Commonly Outside Manufacturer Coverage
Gentek’s published replacement warranty identifies multiple conditions outside its manufacturing-defect coverage. Contractors should review the applicable document, but common examples include:
- Improper installation and installation-caused damage
- Building settlement or structural defects
- Accidents, misuse, abuse or intentional damage
- Hail, fire, flood, lightning and other listed events beyond manufacturer control
- Damage from chemicals, pollutants, brick wash or negligent maintenance
- Painting or coating the vinyl with substances not approved by the manufacturer
- Normal weathering and surface dirt accumulation
- Condensation, frost or freezing caused by household humidity and temperature conditions
- Routine caulking maintenance
- Ordinary glass breakage unless applicable separate coverage was issued
An exclusion does not prove that a particular claim should be denied. Gentek evaluates warranty claims under its terms. The contractor should document facts, avoid deciding the manufacturer’s claim in advance and avoid promising approval.
The Documentation Every Contractor Should Preserve
- Signed customer contract: Identify the manufacturer, product line, styles, sizes and options.
- Final purchase order: Preserve the configuration actually ordered, not merely the preliminary estimate.
- Proof of purchase: Keep invoices and payment records connected to the project address.
- Installation date: Record when each unit was substantially completed.
- Warranty version: Save the document supplied with the windows, including its effective date.
- Window labels: Photograph identifying labels, factory order numbers and window order numbers before they are lost or damaged.
- NFRC and certification labels: Preserve energy-performance and AAMA certification information.
- Installation photographs: Document the prepared opening, flashing, fasteners, perimeter sealing and completed work.
- Glass-breakage rider: Retain proof when separate breakage coverage applies.
- Homeowner handoff: Record that care, operation and warranty materials were delivered.
Finding the Window Order Information
Gentek’s published glass-breakage claim procedure requests the factory order number and window order number from the window warranty label. Its document describes that label as being on the underside of the mainframe above the top sash.
Label placement may vary by product or manufacturing date. Photograph all identifying labels during installation and save the images under the customer’s name and project address.
A clear label photograph takes seconds. Reconstructing an unidentified custom window years later can take hours and may delay the claim.
A More Efficient Warranty-Claim Process
- Identify whether the concern involves the product, glass, finish, screen, hardware or installation.
- Confirm the exact window and project address.
- Locate the warranty issued for that purchase.
- Photograph the entire window and close-up views of the reported condition.
- Record the factory and window order numbers.
- Assemble proof of purchase, property ownership and installation date.
- Describe the symptoms factually without diagnosing beyond the available evidence.
- Submit the claim through Gentek’s current warranty procedure.
- Explain potential shipping, access and labor costs before scheduling service.
- Retain the claim number, correspondence and final resolution.
Popular Homeowner Questions
Does a lifetime warranty cover everything for life?
No. It covers specified defects and components for eligible owners under written limitations. Labor, shipping, installation, accidental damage and other conditions may have different coverage or be excluded.
If Gentek supplies a replacement part, who installs it?
That depends on the applicable labor provision and the contractor’s agreement. Material coverage does not automatically include long-term removal and installation labor.
Is glass breakage always covered?
No. Applicable separate coverage must have been issued, and the published glass-breakage warranty contains owner, property, product and cause-related exclusions.
Are fogged panes covered?
Material obstruction between panes caused by a qualifying manufactured seal failure may fall within applicable insulated-glass coverage. Interior or exterior surface condensation is a different condition.
Does the warranty transfer when I sell my home?
Some Gentek warranties contain limited one-time transfer provisions with deadlines, remaining terms and potential prorated owner costs. Review the warranty issued with the project before the sale.
Will a replacement component match perfectly?
Not necessarily. Existing materials weather over time, and original colors or components may be discontinued. Published Gentek terms allow for possible color variation and compatible substitute components.
Does the product warranty cover water leaking around the opening?
Not automatically. Water can enter through the manufactured unit, installation perimeter, flashing or surrounding wall. The source must be identified before responsibility can be determined.
How AAMA Gold Label Certification Relates to the Warranty
FGIA’s AAMA Gold Label Certification Program provides third-party verification that qualifying labeled products meet applicable air-leakage, water-penetration and structural-performance requirements. Ongoing manufacturing inspections are part of the certification program.
Certification is not a manufacturer warranty. FGIA states that it imposes no warranty requirements on program licensees and does not enforce manufacturer warranties. A Gold Label can help identify a certified product and its manufacturer, but Gentek’s written warranty controls Gentek coverage.
Preserve the label and consult the AAMA Gold Label Certification Program for accurate certification information.
InstallationMasters and Warranty Risk
Gentek’s published replacement warranty distinguishes manufacturing defects from installation-caused problems. This makes installation documentation and adherence to current instructions especially important.
FGIA’s InstallationMasters program covers site inspection, installation materials, water management and accepted practices for replacement and new-construction windows. Following sound procedures can reduce failures and help separate product questions from installation issues.

Contractor Takeaway
A warranty is only as useful as the documentation supporting it. Save the correct document, proof of purchase, installation date, product configuration and identifying labels before the homeowner needs service.
The disciplined sales position is straightforward: explain the warranty’s real strengths without converting limited material coverage into an unlimited promise of free future labor. Accurate expectations protect the homeowner, contractor, supplier and manufacturer.
