The concealed openings allow the exposed panel face to read more like solid soffit. This can be valuable on wide overhangs, front elevations, low porches, and other locations where the underside of the roofline is prominent.

Hidden ventilation primarily changes:

Hidden vents are not invisible from every position. Their visibility can change with overhang height, panel direction, light, viewing angle, and installation.

What Is Fully Vented Soffit?

Fully vented soffit distributes ventilation openings across the designated panel face rather than concentrating them in one center section or concealing them within the profile.

Gentek currently lists Oxford as a 10-inch fully vented soffit and Fairweather in fully perforated and fully lanced 12-inch configurations.[2]

These openings generally remain more apparent from below than Sequoia Select's hidden slots. That can be acceptable or even desirable when the ventilation pattern fits the intended appearance and budget.

“Fully Vented” Does Not Automatically Mean More Airflow

The name of the configuration is not a technical rating. A hidden-vent panel with efficiently designed openings may provide more published ventilation than another panel described as fully vented.

Gentek's current Sequoia Select webpage publishes 10 square inches of ventilation per linear foot. Its August 2026 brochure reports the more precise figure of 9.6 square inches per linear foot.[1][3]

Obtain equivalent current figures for the Oxford or Fairweather profile under consideration. Do not compare Sequoia's documented number against the words “fully vented” and assume the latter is higher.

Compare numbers to numbers

Product names describe configuration. Published net free ventilation values support calculations. Never substitute the first for the second.

Start With the Building's Required Intake

Choosing the panel before calculating the required intake reverses the proper sequence. The building's attic or roof assembly determines the ventilation need; the product must then satisfy it.

The planning sequence should be:

  1. Identify each enclosed attic or roof area.
  2. Determine the applicable ventilation requirement.
  3. Establish the intended intake-and-exhaust balance.
  4. Calculate the intake required at the eaves.
  5. Confirm the rating of each candidate soffit profile.
  6. Calculate the vented linear footage required.
  7. Verify that sufficient usable eave length exists.
  8. Confirm an open air path beyond every vented panel.

Applicable requirements can depend on the jurisdiction, roof configuration, ceiling vapor-control provisions, and other project conditions. Confirm them with the authority having jurisdiction or responsible building professional.

Calculate Required Vented Length

Once the required intake and product rating are known, divide the required square inches by the profile's square inches per linear foot.

Required intake ÷ confirmed ventilation per linear foot = minimum vented panel length

For example, a project requiring 384 square inches of intake would need 40 linear feet of product rated at 9.6 square inches per linear foot. This arithmetic is only an example; it does not establish the required intake for a particular house.

Do not round the result down. Confirm that the calculated length can be distributed across eaves that actually communicate with the attic.

An Open Panel Beneath a Blocked Eave Does Nothing Useful

The published rating assumes air can pass through the product openings. The completed assembly can deliver less useful intake when the area behind the panel is obstructed.

Inspect for:

  • Solid wood soffit left unopened behind the new vinyl
  • Insulation packed against the underside of the roof deck
  • Missing or crushed ventilation chutes
  • Framing blocks that interrupt rafter-bay airflow
  • Debris, insect nests, paint, or sealant blocking openings
  • Receiving accessories that interfere with the vent area

Installing fully vented panels over a sealed assembly does not create attic ventilation. Hidden and visible vents both require a continuous path into the intended roof cavity.

Intake Must Work With Exhaust

Soffit normally provides low intake. The roof system also needs compatible high exhaust where required by the design. Increasing the soffit capacity does not solve an absent, obstructed, or incorrectly placed exhaust.

An oversized exhaust with restricted intake can also draw air from unintended ceiling penetrations. Evaluate the system rather than treating soffit as an isolated product.

Review:

  • Intake capacity and location
  • Exhaust capacity and location
  • Distribution between both sides of the roof
  • Separate attic compartments and additions

Do not isolate the openings from the rest of the product. Compare profile width, texture, projection, color, ventilation, accessories, and cost as one system.

Mixed Solid-and-Vented Layouts Need a Reason

Matching solid and vented profiles allow contractors to place intake where needed while using solid panels elsewhere. The pattern should follow the roof assembly rather than a random alternating sequence.

A decorative pattern can produce poor ventilation distribution if vented panels are concentrated away from the rafter bays they are expected to serve. Conversely, fully venting a porch ceiling that does not connect to the attic may add openings without functional benefit.

  • Solid footage by elevation
  • Attic or roof area served

Color Can Restrict the Profile Choice

Confirm the required ventilation profile before obtaining final color approval. A color available in the solid panel may be unavailable in the matching vented version.
