Contractors must establish the vertical panel layout, account for the product’s 12-inch exposure and 12-foot panel length, balance the left and right end pieces, evaluate openings and gable cuts, calculate realistic offcut reuse, and convert the final quantity into full cartons.

Current manufacturer literature lists ASCEND 12-inch Board & Batten at 12 inches of exposure, a 12-foot panel length, and eight panels per carton. Each carton provides approximately 96 square feet, or 0.96 square, of nominal coverage.1

Use Panel Count as Well as Square Footage

ASCEND Board & Batten has a 12-inch exposure. On a simple wall, one panel position covers approximately one linear foot of wall width. A preliminary panel count can therefore be calculated by dividing the wall width in inches by 12.

Preliminary panel positions = wall width in inches ÷ 12 inches

An 18-foot wall is 216 inches wide:

216 ÷ 12 = 18 panel positions

That count is only preliminary. The first and last panels may need to be rip-cut to create a balanced layout, and the final number of physical panels can change when the wall includes corners, transition trim, or openings.

Center the Board & Batten Layout

ASCEND’s installation guidance calls for a centered, balanced Board & Batten layout, particularly in gables and prominent accent areas. The goal is to avoid ending one side with a narrow sliver while the opposite side ends with a nearly full panel.2

Determine whether the visual centerline should pass through a raised batten or the center of the wider board section. Then work outward toward both sides and compare the final end-piece widths.

Balanced Layout Process

  1. Locate the architectural center of the accent.
  2. Establish a plumb centerline.
  3. Choose whether a batten or board section will be centered.
  4. Lay out 12-inch panel modules in both directions.
  5. Calculate the remaining space at each side.
  6. Adjust the starting position until the end pieces are balanced.
  7. Confirm that both end cuts remain wide enough to install securely.
  8. Record the final physical panel count before ordering.

Why a Balanced Layout Can Increase Waste

A centered layout may require the first panel to be rip-cut even when beginning with a full panel would cover the wall with fewer cuts. That additional material is not careless waste. It is the cost of producing a deliberate, balanced appearance.

Wall Height Can Control the Real Material Quantity

ASCEND Board & Batten panels are 12 feet long. A wall that is close to 12 feet tall can use most of each panel. A wall that is only 5 or 6 feet tall can potentially yield two useful sections from one full panel—but only when the required cuts, factory features, panel orientation, and installation details allow that reuse.

Ten-Foot Accent

Each 12-foot panel produces approximately a 2-foot offcut. Those short sections may have limited reuse value.

Six-Foot Accent

One full-length panel may theoretically produce two 6-foot sections, but the estimator must verify whether both retain the features required for installation.

Can Board & Batten Panels Be Stacked Vertically?

Do not assume two short panels can simply be stacked to cover a wall taller than 12 feet. Board & Batten cannot be end-lapped vertically like a horizontal siding plank.

A wall taller than the available panel length requires a manufacturer-approved horizontal transition or another designed detail. The transition changes both the cladding and accessory takeoff and should be resolved before material is ordered.3

How Should Openings Be Estimated?

Windows and doors reduce the covered wall area but increase the number of cuts. Do not automatically subtract every opening at its full square footage.

Determine how many vertical panel positions cross the opening, how much material remains above and below it, and whether either cut section can be reused.

Opening Analysis

  • How many 12-inch panel positions intersect the opening?
  • Can the lower section remain full height beneath the window?
  • Can the upper section be cut from the same panel?
  • Does the panel retain the required nail hem and locking features?
  • Will finish trim be required at a vertical rip cut?
  • Does the opening interrupt the centered layout?
  • Can the remaining offcut serve another wall position?

When Is Finish Trim Needed?

ASCEND finish trim may be required at qualifying vertical receiving channels when a rip cut removes the panel’s normal fastening or locking support from the flat board section. The Board & Batten quick-start guide states that finish trim is required in certain vertical receiving channels longer than 12 inches, while it is not used in standard horizontal receiving channels.4

The estimator should identify rip-cut conditions before ordering. Finish trim should not be estimated as a duplicate of every foot of J-channel or receiving channel.

How Are Gable Accents Estimated?

For a triangular gable, calculate the nominal area using the base and vertical peak height.

Gable area = Base × Height ÷ 2

Example:

  • Gable base: 24 feet
  • Peak height: 8 feet
  • Nominal area: 24 × 8 ÷ 2 = 96 square feet

A 96-square-foot gable is not automatically a one-carton accent. The gable may mathematically equal the nominal coverage of one carton, but the changing vertical panel lengths and angled top cuts can create offcuts that do not fit another position.

Lay Out Every Gable Panel Position

Board & Batten gables should be centered and balanced before the first panel is cut. When practical, the manufacturer’s full installation guide shows a layout that places a batten at or near the peak for a deliberate finished appearance.2

  1. Locate the gable centerline.
  2. Establish the centered panel pattern.
  3. Mark every 12-inch panel position.
  4. Determine the required panel height at each position.
  5. Pair left- and right-slope cuts where possible.
  6. Confirm that offcuts retain usable panel features.
  7. Calculate full panels required—not merely square feet.
  8. Add contingency for damaged or unusable angle cuts.

Can Opposite-Slope Offcuts Be Reused?

Sometimes. A panel cut for the left side of a symmetrical gable may produce an offcut that appears suitable for the right side. Reuse is only legitimate when the panel orientation, nail hem, interlock, finished surface, batten position, and required length all remain correct.

Do not count a theoretical triangular offcut as reusable until it has been assigned to a specific panel position.

Account for Full-Carton Rounding

ASCEND Board & Batten is packaged eight panels per carton, with approximately 96 square feet of nominal coverage. Small accent areas can therefore show a large apparent waste percentage because the material must be ordered in full cartons.

Cartons required = adjusted Board & Batten area ÷ 96 square feet

Always round up to the next full carton.

Two cartons provide 16 physical panels, which matches the preliminary number of panel positions. However, the estimator must still verify the centered layout, end rip cuts, and whether 9-foot panels can be cut from the 12-foot stock without another condition increasing the panel count.

Example: Small Accent and the Carton-Rounding Problem

Accent area: 105 square feet

Nominal carton coverage: 96 square feet

Minimum carton quantity before additional waste: 2 cartons

Two cartons provide 192 square feet of nominal material. The large apparent surplus is caused mainly by carton packaging—not necessarily by a poor takeoff.

Suggested Preliminary Waste Ranges

ASCEND does not publish one universal waste percentage for every Board & Batten accent. The following ranges are trade-estimating starting points and should be replaced by a project-specific layout before ordering.

Keep Colors and Textures Separate

ASCEND Board & Batten is available in Cedar Mill Grain and Matte finishes and in the manufacturer’s current color range. Material from one texture or color cannot be used to offset a shortage in another.6

Calculate each color-and-texture combination separately and round each one to full cartons. A project using two accent colors may require more total excess than a single-color project with the same combined square footage.

Should Matching Repair Material Be Added?

Keeping a small amount of matching material can simplify a future repair. Product colors, textures, packaging, or availability may change during the life of the building.

Repair stock should remain labeled and stored flat on the carton’s wide side, covered, fully supported, and protected according to ASCEND’s storage instructions.
