How to Explain SteelTek Supreme's 29-Gauge Construction

"29-gauge steel" is a useful specification—but the homeowner is not buying a gauge number. Your job is to translate that specification into what they can actually see, feel and understand about the siding.

There is a common mistake in steel siding presentations.

The salesperson hands the homeowner a SteelTek Supreme® sample and says:

"This is 29-gauge steel."

Then they wait for the homeowner to be impressed.

The problem?

Most homeowners have no idea whether 29 gauge is thick, thin, strong, weak or somewhere in between.

Gentek identifies SteelTek Supreme Steel Siding as roll-formed 29-gauge Galvalume® AZ-50 steel. Gentek's current product directory lists SteelTek Supreme at approximately .017-inch material thickness and identifies a tested yield strength of 35,000 pounds per square inch.

Those specifications are useful—but they become powerful only when the salesperson explains what they mean.

Contractor Academy Rule

Do not sell the number 29. Sell the complete steel panel: thickness, strength, rigidity, finish and installed performance.

First: What Does 29 Gauge Mean?

Gauge is a traditional way of describing the thickness of sheet metal.

One thing that often confuses homeowners is that gauge numbers work backwards:

Lower Gauge Number

Generally means thicker sheet metal within the same material and gauge standard.

Higher Gauge Number

Generally means thinner sheet metal within that same system.

You do not need to spend much time teaching gauge charts.

A homeowner-friendly explanation is:

"Gauge is simply one way the steel thickness is described. SteelTek Supreme is manufactured from 29-gauge steel, which Gentek lists at about .017 inches thick."

Then move quickly to something the homeowner can physically experience.

Do Not Sell Gauge in Isolation

This is important.

Thickness alone does not tell the entire strength story.

SteelTek Supreme's performance comes from a combination of:

29-Gauge Steel
35,000 PSI Yield Strength
Formed Panel Geometry
Galvalume + Kynar System

That is why simply saying "29 gauge" is an incomplete presentation.

A strong salesperson understands the complete system.

The More Useful Number: 35,000 PSI Yield Strength

Gentek lists SteelTek Supreme with a tested yield strength of 35,000 pounds per square inch.

Yield strength describes how much stress a material can withstand before it reaches the point where permanent deformation begins.

The homeowner does not need a structural engineering class.

Say:

"The 29-gauge number tells us about the steel thickness. Gentek also tests the strength of the steel itself and lists SteelTek Supreme at a 35,000 PSI yield strength. Those two specifications together tell us much more than gauge alone."

Gentek explains the yield-strength specification on its SteelTek Supreme product page.

Demonstration #1: Put the Panel in Their Hands

The easiest way to make 29-gauge steel meaningful is to stop talking about it.

Hand them the panel.

"This is the actual 29-gauge SteelTek Supreme panel. Before I explain the numbers, tell me what you notice about how it feels."

Let the homeowner notice:

  • Rigidity
  • Weight
  • The formed profile
  • The feel of the finish
  • The overall construction

Physical experience gives the gauge number context.

Demonstration #2: Turn the Panel Sideways

Do not show only the face.

Turn the panel sideways.

Explain that the strength and appearance of a siding panel are not created by flat-sheet thickness alone.

The steel is roll formed into a siding profile.

SteelTek Supreme's horizontal profiles also feature a deep 1/2" panel projection.

"Look at the shape of the panel. Gentek isn't taking a flat piece of steel and hanging it on your house. The steel is roll formed into this profile, which gives the finished siding its shape, rigidity and shadow line."

Now thickness, shape and design are part of the same conversation.

Demonstration #3: Compare Steel With Another Siding Sample

If the homeowner is also considering vinyl or aluminum, put the actual samples beside each other.

Do not perform an exaggerated bending contest.

Simply say:

"These are different materials with different constructions. I want you to handle each one so you can understand what you're actually comparing."
What to Compare What the Homeowner Does What You Explain
Material Holds both samples SteelTek Supreme is a formed steel cladding system.
Rigidity Feels how each sample behaves Steel's rigidity contributes to dimensional stability.
Profile Looks at samples from the side Roll forming creates the siding shape and projection.

Do Not Tell the Homeowner That Gauge Alone Determines Quality

This is one of the most important technical sales lessons in this article.

Do not say:

"It's 29 gauge, so you know it's strong."

Gauge is one specification.

A better statement is:

"The panel is 29-gauge steel, but gauge is only part of the story. We also want to look at the steel's yield strength, the way the panel is formed, its dimensional stability and the coating system protecting it."

That is a much more defensible premium-product explanation.

Connect 29 Gauge to Dimensional Stability

Gentek describes SteelTek Supreme's rigid steel panels as delivering high dimensional stability.

The manufacturer states that low thermal expansion is less than 1/8" over a 12-foot panel for the anticipated temperature range.

That creates a natural connection:

29-Gauge Steel

Establishes the material thickness.

Rigid Formed Panel

Gives the siding structure and profile.

Low Thermal Expansion

Helps maintain smooth, straight wall lines.

"The gauge tells us the steel thickness, but what you see on the house is the complete result: a rigid formed steel panel that Gentek says moves very little with temperature changes."

Connect 29 Gauge to Impact Resistance Carefully

Gentek specifically describes SteelTek Supreme as being constructed of roll-formed 29-gauge Galvalume AZ-50 steel for resistance to hail damage and denting.

The current SteelTek Supreme manufacturer brochure makes that connection directly.

But do not turn "impact resistant" into:

"It can't dent."

Better:

"Gentek specifically identifies the 29-gauge steel construction as providing resistance to hail damage and denting. I would not call any exterior siding damage-proof, but this is one of the documented strengths of the steel system."

That is accurate and much harder for a competitor to discredit.

Then Show the Hail Warranty

If hail resistance matters to the customer, move from product language to written protection.

Gentek's current SteelTek Supreme Lifetime Limited Warranty includes a 50-year limited hail-protection provision, subject to its terms, exclusions and claims process.

"We've talked about the strength of the steel. Now let's look at what Gentek actually puts in writing regarding hail."

Manufacturer documentation should finish the argument.

Connect 29 Gauge to the Complete Material System

A premium steel presentation becomes stronger when the customer sees that 29 gauge is only the starting point.

Say:

"This is why I don't want you to focus on one number. SteelTek Supreme combines a 29-gauge steel panel, tested yield strength, Galvalume protection and a Kynar exterior coating. We need to evaluate the system as a whole."

How Thick Is SteelTek Supreme?

Gentek's current product directory lists SteelTek Supreme at approximately .017 inches in thickness and identifies that specification as 29 gauge.

Contractors can review this information in the Gentek Product Directory.

Those three numbers together tell a much better technical story than "29 gauge" alone.

Avoid Comparing Gauge Numbers Across Different Materials Without Context

Gauge comparisons can become sloppy quickly.

Do not automatically compare a steel gauge number to:

  • An aluminum gauge number
  • A roofing panel gauge
  • An automotive panel
  • A random competitor sample

Different metals and product applications have different material properties, forming, coatings and performance requirements.

Keep the comparison centered on actual siding systems and documented manufacturer specifications.

Do Not Perform a Hammer Test

A salesperson does not need to hit a SteelTek sample with a hammer to prove it is steel.

Avoid homemade destruction tests.

Avoid

  • Hammer strikes
  • Throwing objects at samples
  • Standing on panels
  • Extreme bending
  • Calling steel dent-proof

Demonstrate Instead

  • Let them hold the panel
  • Show the formed profile
  • Explain yield strength
  • Show Gentek literature
  • Show the written hail warranty

Professional evidence is stronger than a sales stunt.

Use 29 Gauge to Help Explain the Premium Price

The homeowner may ask:

"Why does the steel siding cost more?"

A useful answer is:

"Part of what you're paying for is the material system. SteelTek Supreme starts with a 29-gauge formed steel panel, then adds Galvalume protection and a premium Kynar exterior finish. The steel also has documented yield strength and dimensional-stability characteristics. That is why I want you to compare more than just the two project prices."

Now gauge supports the premium instead of becoming a meaningless specification.

The 10-Second Explanation

Contractor Academy Script

"SteelTek Supreme is made from 29-gauge steel. That number describes the steel thickness, but what really matters is the complete panel—its rigidity, strength, formed profile and protective coating system."

The 30-Second Explanation

Contractor Academy Script

"Gentek manufactures SteelTek Supreme from roll-formed 29-gauge Galvalume steel. Gentek's product directory lists the steel at about .017 inches thick, and the company reports a tested yield strength of 35,000 PSI. I don't want you to buy it because of one gauge number—I want you to see how the complete steel panel is built and how it behaves."

The Technical Version

For the Customer Who Wants Specifications

"SteelTek Supreme uses 29-gauge Galvalume AZ-50 steel. Gentek's current product directory lists SteelTek Supreme at .017-inch thickness, while its product literature identifies a 35,000 PSI yield strength. The steel is roll formed into the siding profile and protected with Galvalume and a Kynar PVDF coating system."

What Should a Salesperson Never Say?

Avoid Better Language
"29 gauge means it's indestructible." "29 gauge describes the steel thickness; Gentek also provides documented strength and impact-resistance information."
"It can't dent." "Gentek describes the construction as resistant to hail damage and denting."
"Gauge tells you everything about quality." "Gauge is one part of the complete steel siding system."
"The higher the gauge number, the stronger the steel." "Gauge numbers generally move inversely to thickness, so lower numbers generally indicate thicker sheet within the same gauge system."

The Better Sales Story: Four Specifications Working Together

29

Gauge Steel

.017"

Listed Thickness

35,000

PSI Yield Strength

< 1/8"

Thermal Expansion Over 12'

Now the salesperson has a much stronger story:

"The steel is 29 gauge, Gentek lists it at about .017 inches thick, reports a 35,000 PSI yield strength and says the finished steel panel has less than 1/8 inch of anticipated thermal expansion over 12 feet. Those specifications together help explain why this product feels and behaves differently."

That is a premium product presentation grounded in actual specifications.

Contractor Academy Takeaway

Gauge is a specification. The panel is the product.

Teach your salespeople what 29 gauge means, but do not let them hide behind the number. Put SteelTek Supreme in the homeowner's hands and demonstrate the complete construction.
