Steel siding is one of the easiest premium siding products to demonstrate physically because homeowners can immediately feel, see and compare the difference. This Contractor Academy lesson shows exactly how to handle the sample, what to point out, what to compare and what to say at the kitchen table.
How to Physically Demonstrate Steel Siding to a Homeowner
Steel siding is one of those products that should be demonstrated with your hands, not just your words.
If you sit at the kitchen table and simply tell a homeowner that steel is durable, premium and low maintenance, you are leaving one of the strongest parts of the presentation unused.
Put the steel in their hands.
Let them feel the rigidity.
Turn the panel sideways.
Show the profile.
Tilt the finish into the light.
Put it beside vinyl and aluminum.
Then explain what they are actually looking at.
Gentek's current SteelTek Supreme® Steel Siding uses Galvalume® AZ-50 steel with a Kynar® PVDF coating system and is available in four profiles. At Suburban Wholesale & Supply, we encourage contractors to build a repeatable physical demonstration around those actual product differences.
The First Rule: Get the Sample Out of Your Hands
Salespeople have a tendency to hold the product while they explain it.
Stop doing that.
Hand the steel siding sample to the homeowner.
Say:
"Before I explain anything about this product, I want you to hold it."
Then be quiet for a moment.
Let the homeowner create their own first impression before you tell them what they are supposed to notice.
Demonstration #1: Ask What They Notice
Once the homeowner has the steel in their hands, ask:
"What do you notice about it?"
Their answer may include:
If they identify the difference themselves, your next explanation becomes easier.
You are reinforcing something they already discovered instead of making a claim they have to accept.
Demonstration #2: Put Steel Beside Vinyl
Place a quality vinyl siding sample next to the steel.
Do not attack the vinyl product.
Say:
"Both of these are products we can confidently offer. I want you to physically compare how the two systems are constructed."
Let the homeowner handle both samples.
Ask them to compare:
- The feel of the material
- The rigidity
- The profile
- The surface finish
- The overall construction
You do not need to create an artificial winner. The purpose is to show that these are different siding categories.
Demonstration #3: Put Steel Beside Aluminum
This can be especially useful when the homeowner currently has aluminum siding.
Many homeowners hear "metal siding" and assume steel and aluminum are basically the same product.
Put both samples on the table and let them compare.
"These are both metal siding products, but I want you to feel the difference between aluminum and steel before we talk about which one fits your project."
Again, physical comparison does more work than a long verbal explanation.
Demonstration #4: Turn the Steel Sideways
Never show siding only from the face.
Turn the SteelTek Supreme sample sideways.
Gentek's current horizontal SteelTek Supreme profiles use a 1/2" butt, which helps create dimension and shadow across the finished wall.
Point to the profile and say:
"This is something you won't appreciate if I only show you the front of the panel. Look at the depth here. That profile helps create the shadow line you see when this is installed across an entire wall."
The specification has now become something visual.
Demonstration #5: Show the Locking Edge
Use a sample large enough that the homeowner can see how the panel is formed and how the edges are designed to work together.
You do not need to give them an installer training class.
Simply show that this is an engineered cladding system—not a flat sheet of metal attached to a wall.
"This panel is formed into a siding profile and designed to lock into the courses around it. The details you see here are part of the complete system."
Keep this part brief unless the homeowner asks installation questions.
Demonstration #6: Explain What the Metal Actually Is
Now that the homeowner has physically handled the panel, explain the basic construction.
Gentek identifies SteelTek Supreme as heavy-duty Galvalume AZ-50 steel. According to Gentek's current SteelTek Supreme product information, the Galvalume coating uses an aluminum-zinc alloy designed to help protect the steel substrate from the elements.
Keep the explanation simple:
"The core of this product is steel. Gentek protects that steel with its Galvalume coating system before the finished exterior coating is applied."
You have given the homeowner enough technical information to understand the product without overwhelming them.
Demonstration #7: Tilt the Finish Toward the Light
SteelTek Supreme uses a Kynar PVDF coating system.
Instead of simply reading the coating name, show the finish.
Tilt the sample under the kitchen light or toward natural light from a window.
Let the homeowner see the low-gloss appearance and texture.
Gentek describes the Kynar system as highly durable and weatherable, with color-retention and scratch-resistance characteristics. Those manufacturer details are available on the official SteelTek Supreme product page.
"Rather than looking at this finish in a brochure, I want you to see how the actual surface looks when light hits it."
Again, demonstrate first and describe second.
Demonstration #8: Show the SteelTek Supreme Profiles
Steel siding should not be presented as one generic exterior appearance.
SteelTek Supreme is currently offered in four profiles:
D4 Clapboard
Traditional horizontal profile with two 4" exposures per panel.
D5 Clapboard
Broader horizontal profile with two 5" exposures per panel.
8" Single
Wide single-course horizontal profile.
12" Board & Batten
Vertical steel profile for whole-house or accent applications.
Put profile samples or photographs beside each other and ask:
"Which of these profiles looks most like the finished exterior you have in mind?"
Steel is now being sold as design—not just durability.
Demonstration #9: Compare the Profiles From Across the Room
Siding is not viewed from six inches away after installation.
Lay the profile samples against a wall or hold them vertically and horizontally.
Step back several feet.
Ask the homeowner:
"Now that we're looking from farther away, which scale do you prefer?"
This helps the homeowner understand how exposure and profile affect the architecture from normal viewing distances.
Demonstration #10: Put Real Colors Against the House
Do not finish the physical demonstration at the kitchen table.
Take the actual SteelTek Supreme color samples outside.
Compare them against:
- Roofing
- Brick
- Stone
- Windows
- Existing soffit and fascia
- Garage doors
- Entry doors
Gentek specifically recommends confirming final colors using actual product samples because screens can change how colors appear.
That manufacturer recommendation is another reason physical samples belong in every steel siding sales kit.
Demonstration #11: Show the Complete Exterior Color System
Do not show steel siding in isolation.
Add coordinating trim, soffit, fascia and rainware samples whenever possible.
Gentek's Color Clear Through® program is designed to help coordinate exterior colors across its siding, soffit, fascia, trim and rainware categories.
Instead of selling one steel siding color, help the homeowner design the complete exterior.
Demonstration #12: Show the Written Warranty
Physical demonstration does not stop with the panel.
Put the actual warranty in front of the homeowner.
Gentek's current SteelTek Supreme Lifetime Limited Warranty includes lifetime limited coverage for the original property owner, subject to its written terms, along with 50-year limited hail protection and 35-year limited chalk and color-change protection.
Say:
"We've physically looked at the product. Now let's physically look at what the manufacturer actually puts in writing."
This makes the warranty part of the demonstration rather than another sales claim.
Do Not Perform Fake Destruction Tests
This is important.
Contractors sometimes feel they need a dramatic stunt to prove a product is strong.
Avoid:
- Hitting the siding with hammers
- Throwing objects at the sample
- Standing on samples unless specifically approved by the manufacturer
- Claiming the panel is dent-proof
- Calling the product hail-proof
- Creating demonstrations that do not reflect actual installed conditions
Use documented manufacturer testing and warranty information instead.
A professional demonstration builds trust. A carnival trick can undermine it.
Do Not Scratch the Sample to "Prove" the Finish
The same principle applies to coating demonstrations.
Do not intentionally damage a siding sample to make an exaggerated point.
Instead, let homeowners inspect the Kynar PVDF finish and then show them Gentek's documented description of its coating characteristics.
The manufacturer information should support the physical product—not a salesperson-created torture test.
Use This Exact Seven-Minute Physical Demonstration
| Time | What You Physically Do | What You Say |
|---|---|---|
| Minute 1 | Hand the homeowner the steel. | "Before I explain it, tell me what you notice." |
| Minute 2 | Put steel beside vinyl or aluminum. | "Let's compare the actual products." |
| Minute 3 | Turn the steel sideways. | "Look at the profile and depth." |
| Minute 4 | Tilt the finish toward the light. | "Look at the actual Kynar finish rather than a photo." |
| Minute 5 | Show D4, D5, 8" and Board & Batten. | "Which profile fits your home best?" |
| Minute 6 | Take colors to the window or outside. | "Which color works with the permanent parts of your home?" |
| Minute 7 | Put the warranty on the table. | "Let's see what Gentek actually puts in writing." |
Then Ask Whether They Want Steel Priced
After the physical demonstration, do not assume the homeowner wants the upgrade.
Ask:
"You've now had a chance to physically compare the products. Would you like me to price SteelTek Supreme alongside the other siding option so you can see the actual investment difference?"
If they say yes, you have earned permission to move into the premium proposal.
The Demonstration Should Lead Into Design
Once the homeowner likes the steel product itself, move from the sample to the house.
Show:
- Installed project photographs
- Profile examples
- Color combinations
- Board & Batten accents
- Coordinating trim
- Visualization options
Gentek's SteelTek Supreme resource page includes access to its exterior visualizer, allowing users to compare products, profiles and colors.
The physical sample explains the material. Visualization explains what that material can become on the homeowner's house.
Practice With Your Sales Team
A good physical demonstration should look effortless.
That only happens with practice.
Have salespeople practice:
- Handing over the sample instead of holding it.
- Asking what the homeowner notices.
- Comparing steel with vinyl without insulting vinyl.
- Turning the sample sideways.
- Explaining Galvalume in one sentence.
- Explaining Kynar in one sentence.
- Showing profile choices.
- Moving color samples into natural light.
- Showing the written warranty.
- Asking permission to price the steel upgrade.
The goal is not to memorize a speech. The goal is to make the physical demonstration consistent enough that every homeowner gets the same opportunity to understand the product.
The Biggest Mistake Is Talking While the Product Sits in the Bag
If you carry a SteelTek Supreme sample into the house and never put it in the homeowner's hands, you missed the point of bringing it.
Steel siding is highly demonstrable.
Use that advantage.
Weak Presentation
"Steel is strong and has a good warranty."
Better Presentation
"Here is the steel sample. Let me explain the product."
Strong Presentation
"Hold this. What differences do you notice? Now let's compare it with your other options."
