Identify the Type of Damage

Is the Damage Cosmetic or Functional?

A superficial scuff is different from a crack through the panel. A visible seam is different from a disengaged locking connection. The assessment should consider both appearance and function.

Functional concerns may include:

Can One Fairhaven Sound Panel Be Replaced?

Localized panel replacement may be possible, depending on the damage location, panel availability, surrounding installation and Gentek’s repair procedure. It should not be assumed that standard vinyl siding replacement instructions apply directly.

PEPA/VSI publishes a general process for unlocking adjacent vinyl siding, removing fasteners and inserting a replacement panel. Fairhaven Sound is polypropylene specialty siding with its own panel shape, locking system and installation requirements.

A contractor should use Gentek’s current repair or installation instructions for the exact profile. Improvised cuts, face fastening and forced engagement may affect movement, appearance and warranty rights.

Why Matching an Older Wall Can Be Difficult

Even when the original color name is known, a new replacement panel may initially appear different from siding that has experienced years of sunlight, shade and ordinary weathering.

Other matching complications can include:

• A profile or color that is no longer offered in the local market
• Changes in product specifications or accessory systems
• Different light exposure on the replacement area
• Dirt or organic buildup on the original wall
• Previously repaired panels from another production period
• Different textures between the panel and surrounding trim

Clean the surrounding wall only according to Gentek’s care instructions before making a final color judgment. Never power wash Fairhaven Sound siding.

Save Labeled Material After the Original Installation

Keeping a few usable panels from the original project may simplify a future localized repair. Those panels should remain labeled, properly supported and stored according to Gentek’s instructions.

Also retain:

• The exact profile and color name
• Product codes and carton labels
• The supplier invoice
• The installation contract
• Contractor contact information
• Before, during and after photographs
• The written warranty in effect at purchase

A loose, unidentified panel in a garage is much less useful than a properly stored panel connected to complete project records.

Hail Damage: Contact Insurance Before Assuming Warranty Coverage

Gentek’s current Fairhaven Sound webpage advertises hail protection, but the written warranty controls the actual benefit. Available warranty documents describe conditions involving homeowner’s insurance or comparable coverage.

Hail provisions may address only certain costs, materials or circumstances. They should not be interpreted as automatic payment for complete removal, labor, freight, accessories or an entire exterior.

After a hail event:

1. Photograph the home before repairs or aggressive cleaning.
2. Review the homeowner’s insurance notice requirements.
3. Obtain Gentek’s current written warranty for the installed product.
4. Ask whether a manufacturer inspection or authorization is required.
5. Do not sign an open-ended repair contract under storm-pressure tactics.
6. Compare the contractor’s scope with the insurer’s and manufacturer’s findings.

Manufacturing Defect, Installation Problem or External Damage?

These categories should not be blended together. Responsibility and available remedies may differ.

Do Not Repair Before Reviewing Claim Requirements

A warranty or insurer may require notice, documentation, inspection or authorization before permanent work begins. Obtain those requirements in writing.

Avoid these premature actions:

• Discarding the damaged panel
• Painting or coating the affected area
• Using adhesive as a permanent repair
• Face-nailing the panel without approved instructions
• Pressure washing suspected marks
• Replacing an entire wall before the scope is documented
• Assuming a contractor’s verbal promise is warranty authorization

Repairs Must Preserve Movement and Water Management

A replacement panel needs more than a close color match. It must engage the surrounding siding, be fastened correctly and preserve required expansion and contraction movement.

If the work occurs near windows, rooflines, mounting blocks or material transitions, the contractor should also inspect the water-resistive barrier and flashing. PEPA/VSI guidance treats polymeric siding as part of a water-managed wall assembly rather than a standalone waterproof surface.

A repair that looks acceptable from the street can still be incomplete if it compromises drainage or panel movement behind the visible face.

Questions to Ask a Repair Contractor

1. Have you identified the exact Fairhaven Sound profile? “Shake siding” is not a sufficient product identification.
2. Is a matching replacement panel currently available? Confirm the product code and color before removing material.
3. Which Gentek repair instructions will you follow? Generic vinyl-siding methods may not apply to polypropylene panels.
4. Will surrounding panels or trim need to be removed? The written scope should identify the likely repair area.
5. How will flashing and the water-resistive barrier be protected? This matters especially around openings and roof intersections.
6. What happens if concealed damage is discovered? Establish authorization and pricing procedures before work begins.

Repair Quality and Resale Presentation
