Start with the Layers of a Steel Panel

A finished Gentek steel-siding panel is not simply bare steel with color sprayed onto it. At a simplified level, the system includes:

1. A sheet-steel substrate that gives the panel strength and form.
2. A Galvalume aluminum-zinc metallic coating applied to the steel.
3. Pretreatment and primer layers used as part of the factory finish system.
4. An exposed Kynar PVDF or heat-fused PVC finish, depending on the Gentek product.

Each layer has a different role. The Galvalume coating helps protect the steel from corrosion, while the exterior finish supplies the visible color, texture, gloss, and another layer of environmental protection.

What Is Galvalume?

Galvalume is the trade name for sheet steel protected by a nominal 55% aluminum-zinc alloy coating. BIEC International identifies itself as the worldwide licensor of the technology associated with 55% aluminum-zinc-coated sheet steel.

U.S. Steel describes Galvalume as sheet steel with a nominally 55% aluminum and 43% zinc alloy coating applied through a continuous hot-dip process. A small amount of silicon is also part of the coating composition.

The coated sheet is subsequently formed and finished for products such as exterior wall panels. Gentek then supplies its own product geometry, texture, factory finish, colors, packaging, installation requirements, and warranty.

What Does “AZ-50” Mean?

“AZ” identifies an aluminum-zinc alloy coating. In the English-unit coating-weight designation, AZ-50 represents a minimum total coating weight of 0.50 ounces per square foot across both sides of the sheet under the applicable measurement convention.

That number describes mass per area. It is not a claim that the metallic coating is 0.50 inches thick, and it is not the same measurement as 29-gauge steel.

How the Aluminum-Zinc Coating Protects Steel

Metal Construction Association technical guidance describes 55% aluminum-zinc coatings as combining aluminum’s barrier protection with zinc’s sacrificial or galvanic behavior. These mechanisms help slow corrosion of the underlying steel.

In plain language:

• The aluminum-rich portion contributes a durable barrier between the environment and the steel.
• Zinc contributes galvanic protection, including limited protection at scratches, cut edges, and formed areas.
• The factory-applied exterior finish provides another protective layer over the metallic coating.

This layered protection reduces corrosion risk. It does not eliminate corrosion under every exposure or after unlimited surface damage.

AZ-50 Is Not a Service-Life Prediction

The designation does not tell a homeowner that the siding will last a specific number of years. Service conditions include:

• The exact coating and panel system
• Factory quality and panel fabrication
• Climate and atmospheric exposure
• Salt, chemicals, pollution, and organic debris
• Roof runoff and splash-back
• Fastener and accessory compatibility
• Cut-edge and scratch management
• Installation quality and future maintenance

Manufacturer warranty periods should not be treated as guaranteed service-life predictions either. A limited warranty defines specified remedies for qualifying conditions under written terms; it does not state when every panel will require replacement.

AZ-50 Does Not Tell You the Steel Gauge

Coating weight and steel thickness are different specifications. Gentek expressly identifies SteelTek Supreme as roll-formed 29-gauge Galvalume AZ-50 steel.

Gentek’s SteelTek product page describes heavy-duty Galvalume AZ-50 steel but does not display a numerical gauge in its main published profile specifications. Do not assume SteelTek uses the same gauge merely because both products use AZ-50.

If gauge is important to the comparison, obtain the current Gentek product directory or written specification for the exact SteelTek profile. A sample’s apparent stiffness is useful for demonstration but is not a calibrated thickness measurement.

AZ-50 Does Not Tell You the Yield Strength

Yield strength describes the stress at which steel begins to deform permanently. Gentek’s SteelTek Supreme brochure reports a yield strength of 35,000 pounds per square inch.

That value is separate from gauge and AZ-50 coating weight. The Metal Construction Association recommends that steel thickness, yield strength, metallic coating, and finish system be considered together because each affects fabrication or performance differently.

The Factory Finish Still Matters

Both Gentek systems use Galvalume AZ-50, but they do not use the same exposed finish:

• SteelTek Supreme uses Kynar PVDF coating technology.
• SteelTek uses a primed, heat-fused PVC coating.

That distinction affects surface character, available colors, published coating claims, scuff resistance, and written chalk and color-change coverage. The shared Galvalume substrate should not be used to suggest that the two complete panels are identical.

Why Cut Edges Require Care

Cutting a steel panel exposes an edge where the field-applied finish no longer covers the complete cross-section. The surrounding metallic coating can provide some protection, but an exposed edge should not be treated as invulnerable.

Proper cutting affects both performance and appearance:

• Use only manufacturer-approved cutting tools and blades.
• Avoid excessive heat that can damage nearby coatings.
• Remove metal filings and cutting debris promptly.
• Do not allow filings to rust on finished panel surfaces.
• Position cuts and laps according to Gentek’s instructions.
• Use only manufacturer-approved methods for treating field damage.

A generic can of metal paint is not automatically compatible with the SteelTek Supreme or SteelTek finish and may affect appearance or warranty evaluation.

Scratches Should Be Evaluated by Depth

Not every visible mark reaches the steel substrate. Some marks may be surface transfer, while others may penetrate the exterior finish, primer, metallic coating, or base steel.

Before attempting a repair:

1. Photograph the mark in clear light.
2. Determine whether it is dirt, transferred material, scuffing, or coating loss.
3. Identify the exact SteelTek product and color.
4. Consult Gentek’s current care or repair instructions.
5. Preserve evidence before acting if a warranty or freight claim may exist.

Aggressive cleaning can turn a cosmetic mark into permanent finish damage. Sanding can remove intact protective layers around a small defect.

Dissimilar Metals Can Create Additional Risk

When different metals are placed in electrical contact and exposed to moisture, galvanic corrosion may occur. The risk depends on the metal combination, relative exposed areas, electrolyte, contaminants, and environmental conditions.

Metal Construction Association guidance recommends compatible fasteners and notes that fasteners should, where possible, be made from the same material as the wall or roof system—or at least provide equivalent corrosion resistance.

Fastener selection should follow Gentek’s instructions. A contractor should not substitute an inexpensive fastener solely because it fits through the slot.

Trapped Moisture and Chemicals Can Defeat Good Materials

Industry corrosion guidance identifies chemically contaminated water, trapped moisture, and dissimilar-metal reactions as common contributors to accelerated metal corrosion. Several risks occurring together can worsen the effect.

Potential residential trouble locations include:

• Areas below overflowing gutters
• Walls receiving concentrated roof runoff
• Siding buried against soil, mulch, or debris
• Driveway edges exposed to deicing salts
• Poorly drained horizontal trim ledges
• Joints that trap wet organic material
• Chemical fumes or direct chemical contact

Gentek’s general steel-siding warranty contains exclusions involving harmful chemicals, fumes, vapors, and salt spray. The complete warranty applicable to the installed product should be reviewed before making coverage assumptions.

Steel Siding Is Still Cladding

Galvalume does not remove the need for a water-managed wall. Steel siding contains laps, joints, cut edges, openings, and transitions through which incidental water can move behind the visible surface.

The project must provide the required water-resistive barrier, flashing, drainage paths, and opening details. AZ-50 protects the steel panel; it does not serve as the entire home’s drainage plane.

Does Galvalume Make the Siding Hail-Proof?

No. Galvalume concerns the metallic coating on the steel. Hail response depends on steel thickness, yield strength, profile geometry, underlying support, temperature, impact energy, and storm conditions.

Gentek provides limited hail-protection language in its written steel-siding warranties, but that coverage includes procedures, insurance requirements, owner payments, material-versus-labor distinctions, geographic limitations, and other terms. Warranty coverage is not proof that damage cannot occur.

Does Galvalume Make Steel Maintenance-Free?

Gentek describes its steel siding as virtually maintenance-free or low-maintenance. That describes the reduced need for recurring painting and scraping compared with some traditional materials.

Reasonable ownership still includes:

• Periodic cleaning according to Gentek’s instructions
• Inspection after hail and wind events
• Prompt evaluation of deep scratches
• Keeping gutters and drainage paths functional
• Avoiding chemical and salt accumulation
• Preserving warranty and product records

How to Read a Gentek Steel-Siding Specification

A useful quotation should identify all of the following:

1. Which exact Gentek steel product is being installed?
2. Does the quotation identify Galvalume AZ-50?
3. What gauge does Gentek publish for the selected profile?
4. Is the finish Kynar PVDF or heat-fused PVC?
5. Which cutting tools and blades does Gentek approve?
6. How will metal filings be removed from the siding and site?
7. Which fasteners and accessories will prevent compatibility problems?
8. How will cut edges and scratches be evaluated?
9. How will runoff, splash-back, and trapped debris be controlled?
10. Which warranty certificate applies to the order?

The Bottom Line

Galvalume AZ-50 is an aluminum-zinc metallic coating specification used on the steel substrate in Gentek SteelTek Supreme and SteelTek siding. It contributes meaningful corrosion protection beneath the exposed finish.

It does not identify the steel gauge, yield strength, exterior finish, profile, insulation value, hail resistance, installed service life, or warranty by itself.

Evaluate AZ-50 as one component of a layered steel-siding system. The finished result still depends on the complete Gentek product, compatible accessories, correct fabrication, proper installation, thoughtful water management, and reasonable maintenance.
