Should You Air-Seal the Walls During a Shake Siding Project?

ENERGY STAR states that sealing air leaks and adding insulation can improve comfort and energy efficiency, and its consumer materials describe potential household savings. Those broad estimates should not be converted into a guaranteed result for one siding project.
Actual savings depend on:
- The home’s starting leakage rate
- The exact areas sealed
- Existing and added insulation
- Heating and cooling equipment
- Fuel and electricity prices
- Thermostat settings and occupant behavior
- Weather conditions
- Quality of installation
The defensible claim is that measured air sealing and insulation can improve enclosure performance. The amount should be documented rather than guessed.
Air-Sealing Details Affect Exterior Aesthetics
