What a Homeowner Walkthrough Can—and Cannot—Confirm

A homeowner can evaluate color, profile, alignment, visible damage, trim consistency and completion of the agreed design. A visual walkthrough cannot prove every concealed fastener, flashing lap, water-resistive-barrier connection or structural attachment.

Begin with the Contract and Approved Design

Bring the final contract, approved change orders, material schedule and design images to the walkthrough. Without the agreed scope, it is difficult to distinguish incomplete work from something that was never included.

Confirm that the documents identify:

• The exact Fairhaven Sound profile
• The selected color
• Every elevation receiving shakes or scallops
• The main horizontal or vertical siding product
• Corner, window and door treatments
• Soffit, fascia and rainware included in the scope
• Exterior insulation or wall repairs
• Approved changes made during construction

Review the Home from Three Distances

A defect visible only from inches away is different from one that disrupts the entire street-facing elevation. Record both, but describe the viewing condition accurately.

1. Confirm the Product and Color

• The installed product is Fairhaven Sound Single Select.
• The profile matches the approved shake or scallop selection.
• The color name and product code match the final order.
• The main siding and accent locations match the elevation design.
• Coordinating trim, soffit and fascia follow the approved palette.
• No unexplained material substitution appears in the completed work.

Compare the finished wall with product labels and order documentation, not only with a digital rendering. Screens and printed images are not exact color standards.

2. Review Course Alignment

NAHB’s general siding quality-control checklist emphasizes straight, level panel lines and consistent alignment around corners, windows and doors. Fairhaven Sound’s profile-specific installation still controls the technical details.

Visually check whether:

• Courses remain level across long walls.
• Connected walls align appropriately at visible corners.
• Scallop curves form a consistent horizontal rhythm.
• Shake texture appears natural without hiding crooked courses.
• Window and door cuts appear balanced.
• Gable courses meet rake edges cleanly.
• The peak termination looks planned rather than compressed.

3. Look for Distracting Seam Patterns

Gentek says Fairhaven Sound includes self-concealing side tabs, varied mold patterns and extended panels intended to create longer lines and a more natural appearance.

From a normal viewing distance, look for:

• Panel ends forming a conspicuous vertical path
• The same molded pattern repeated in adjacent positions
• One joint casting a much stronger shadow than surrounding joints
• Connections that appear incompletely engaged
• Short or awkward pieces in highly visible areas

Some joints may remain visible under close or low-angle light. The relevant question is whether they blend into the overall wall or dominate it.

4. Inspect Wall Flatness

PEPA/VSI guidance calls for siding to be installed over a smooth, flat surface. Walk past each wall rather than reviewing it only from directly in front.

Side views and low-angle light can reveal:

• Localized bulges or depressions
• Waviness associated with the wall behind the siding
• Panels projecting differently at joints
• Trim that moves in and out along an uneven surface
• Distortion around over-tight accessories or penetrations

Do not diagnose the cause from appearance alone. Document the location and ask the contractor to evaluate it against Gentek’s instructions.

5. Review Corners and Material Transitions

• Outside corners appear straight from top to bottom.
• Corner widths and colors are consistent.
• Receiving pockets properly contain panel edges.
• Transition bands remain level.
• Shake-to-horizontal-siding transitions look deliberate.
• Masonry transitions do not contain exposed, unfinished edges.
• Roof-to-wall intersections appear complete without siding pressed against roofing.

Decorative trim should clarify material changes. It should not conceal incomplete flashing or block drainage paths.

6. Inspect Windows and Doors

PEPA’s homeowner and installation resources emphasize careful preparation around openings. From the exterior, review:

• Consistent trim widths
• Orderly head, jamb and sill relationships
• No visibly open or unfinished corners
• No siding forced tightly into receiving channels
• Head-flashing details included where specified
• Window drainage openings that remain unobstructed
• Sealant only in locations where the design requires it

Ask the contractor for installation photographs showing the concealed flashing before the siding and trim covered it.

7. Check Fixtures and Penetrations

Textured siding should not be used as an uneven mounting surface for lights and utilities.

Review:

• Exterior lights
• Electrical outlets
• Faucets and hose connections
• Dryer and bath vents
• Utility penetrations
• Cameras and doorbells
• House numbers and decorative fixtures

Each item should be stable, properly supported and finished with a compatible mounting detail. The siding should not appear crushed or distorted around it.

8. Review Soffit, Fascia and Roof Edges

• Soffit panels remain straight and securely supported.
• Vented and solid soffit locations match the project design.
• Fascia lines appear continuous.
• Gutters and downspouts are secured and correctly directed.
• Roof-edge trim does not appear loose or unfinished.
• Gable shakes terminate cleanly beneath the soffit and along rake edges.
• Attic ventilation paths have not been blocked by insulation or construction debris.

Verification of attic ventilation requires product data and a system calculation—not merely the presence of perforated soffit panels.

9. Ask the Contractor to Verify Technical Items

Do not pull, unlock or pry finished Fairhaven Sound panels yourself. Ask the contractor to provide written confirmation or inspection documentation for technical items.

General Vinyl Checklists Are Not Fairhaven Instructions

NAHB and PEPA/VSI quality-control resources contain useful principles such as level courses, loose rather than restrictive fastening and properly engaged panels.

Fairhaven Sound is polypropylene specialty siding. Generic vinyl measurements, fastener spacing and movement tests should not be applied to it unless Gentek’s current instructions support them.

Use general checklists to ask better questions—not to override the manufacturer.

10. Review Cleanup and Property Condition

• Old siding and construction waste have been removed as contracted.
• Loose fasteners and sharp debris have been collected.
• Driveways, walks, decks and landscaping are reasonably clean.
• Gutters and roof surfaces are clear of installation debris.
• Exterior outlets, faucets and fixtures function normally.
• Temporary coverings and labels have been removed.
• Repair material has been labeled and transferred to the homeowner.

Create a Written Completion List

Record unresolved items by location and description. “Fix siding” is too vague. “Front west gable: inspect the panel connection above the left window” is actionable.

For each item, include:

• A photograph
• The elevation and nearby landmark
• The observed condition
• The requested review or correction
• The responsible party
• The agreed completion date
• Written confirmation when resolved

Follow the contract’s payment and dispute terms. Do not invent withholding rights or ignore required notice procedures.

Collect the Project File

Before closing the project, collect:

• Final contract and change orders
• Supplier invoice and material schedule
• Profile, color and product-code labels
• Before, during and after photographs
• Permit and inspection records where applicable

• Contractor workmanship warranty

Final Documentation and Resale

A walkthrough does not guarantee a higher resale value. A clean exterior and complete project record can make future maintenance, inspection and warranty discussions more straightforward.

Save the records in a transferable digital folder and provide them to a future buyer. Documentation is more useful than an unsupported statement that the siding was “professionally installed.”
