Planning a Gentek SteelTek Supreme Project: Final Selection, Installation and Documentation Checklist

A successful steel siding project is decided long before the first panel reaches the wall. Color and profile matter, but so do substrate conditions, flashing, material transitions, accessory compatibility, quantities, workmanship expectations and warranty records. This final guide brings those decisions into one practical sequence.

The Short Answer

Define the complete scope, document existing conditions, select the siding as part of the whole exterior, obtain an elevation-specific material plan and confirm every installation transition before ordering.

Do not allow the project to move from an attractive sample to a binding order while windows, insulation, flashing, utilities, accessories or warranty documentation remain unresolved.

Phase 1: Define What the Project Is Actually Solving

Begin with the reason for the renovation. “We want new siding” is not specific enough to guide expensive decisions.

Identify the primary objectives:

  • Replace damaged, deteriorated or outdated cladding.
  • Improve the home’s architectural appearance.
  • Reduce routine painting or scraping.
  • Coordinate siding with roof, windows or an addition.
  • Inspect or improve portions of the wall assembly.
  • Correct poorly executed trim or material transitions.
  • Prepare the property for long-term ownership or resale.

These goals can conflict. A highly personal color may satisfy long-term owners but narrow near-term buyer appeal. Adding continuous insulation may support an energy objective while increasing trim depth, attachment and flashing complexity.

The profile should reinforce the home’s scale and form:

  • D4 provides a finer horizontal rhythm that may suit detailed or traditionally proportioned homes.
  • D5 provides a moderately broader clapboard pattern.
  • The 8-inch Single reduces the number of horizontal lines across broad wall planes.
  • Board and batten creates a strong vertical rhythm suitable for compatible whole-home designs or defined architectural volumes.

Use a second profile only when it clarifies the architecture. Front gables, projecting entries, upper floors and separate wings may provide defensible boundaries.

If the profile change stops in the middle of a continuous wall or exists only to make the façade “more interesting,” reconsider it.

Phase 5: Build the Color Palette Around Fixed Materials

Existing roofing, brick, stone, mortar and permanent window finishes should vote before the siding color is selected.

Use this order:

  1. Identify fixed materials that are staying.
  2. Determine their dominant colors and undertones.
  3. Choose the siding body-color candidates.

Gentek also identifies Hover as a tool contractors and builders may use for measurements, design, takeoffs, photographs and material lists. Digital measurement can improve planning, but it does not eliminate field verification or responsibility for order accuracy.

Phase 7: Approve Color With Physical Samples

Gentek warns that screen settings, lighting, viewing angle, exposure, texture and profile can affect color appearance. The manufacturer recommends placing actual samples side by side in their planned orientation and viewing them outdoors at different times.

  1. Gather actual siding, roof, window and trim samples.
  2. Place them beside existing brick, stone and mortar.
  3. Position horizontal and vertical siding in their intended direction.
  4. Review the group in morning, midday and afternoon light.
  5. Repeat the review in shade and overcast conditions.
  6. Step back to the driveway and street.
  7. Evaluate every elevation, not only the front.
  8. Record the final product, profile and color in writing.

Do not approve from a sample held under indoor lighting or from a photograph alone.

Phase 8: Define the Wall Assembly

Siding is one component of the exterior wall. The project must identify what lies behind it and how water, air and heat are managed.

Confirm:

  • Existing cladding removal or approved overcladding scope.
  • Sheathing condition and repair responsibility.
  • Water-resistive barrier requirements.

Review transitions at:

  • Inside and outside corners.
  • Horizontal and vertical siding changes.
  • Brick, stone, stucco and foundation materials.
  • Window and door heads, jambs and sills.

  • Soffit, fascia and frieze conditions.
  • Deck ledgers, porches and attached roofs.
  • Meters, vents, lights and other penetrations.

A rendering establishes appearance. It does not prove that a transition drains correctly or complies with the product instructions.

Phase 10: Build an Order-Ready Material List

Wall area alone is not an order. A complete material list must account for profiles, accessories, transitions, waste, damage allowance and replacement stock.

The order should identify:

  • Siding profile, color and quantity by elevation.
  • Starter components and panel receivers.
  • Inside and outside corner treatments.
  • Window, door and transition trim.
  • Soffit, fascia, rainware and related coil.
  • Fasteners and compatible accessories.
  • Mounting components for utilities and fixtures.
  • Flashing materials assigned to the project scope.
  • Calculated waste for cuts and layout.
  • Extra labeled material retained for future repairs.

Ask who owns quantity errors. If the estimate is described as approximate, understand how shortages, expedited freight and excess material will be handled.

Phase 11: Compare Contracts, Not Just Bottom-Line Prices

Two siding proposals may contain materially different scopes even when both name SteelTek Supreme.

Gentek describes SteelTek Supreme as requiring no routine painting or scraping and states that most airborne dirt can be removed with a garden-hose rinse.

Low maintenance still includes:

  • Periodic visual inspections.
  • Review after significant storms or exterior work.
  • Cleaning according to the current Gentek care instructions.
  • Maintaining gutters and roof drainage.

“Low maintenance” is supportable. “Never needs attention” is not.

  9. Does the material list include all accessories and appropriate waste?
  10. What manufacturer and workmanship warranties apply?
  11. Who pays for quantity errors, changes and expedited materials?
  12. What documents will the owner receive at completion?

If the answer to a major question is “we will figure it out during installation,” the project is not fully ready.

A Realistic Resale Perspective

Steel siding, a transferable warranty and an attractive exterior may support buyer confidence, but they do not guarantee a particular sale price or return on investment.

For resale, the strongest package is not a marketing claim. It is a coherent exterior supported by invoices, product records, warranty documents, permits, maintenance information and professional installation.

Buyers can evaluate evidence. They cannot verify undocumented promises.
