How Do You Estimate Waste for ASCEND Cladding?

ASCEND Composite Cladding does not have one universal waste percentage that works for every project. A simple rectangular wall may use material efficiently, while a home with numerous windows, short returns, dormers, gables, mixed profiles, and architectural accents can create substantially more unusable material.

A reliable estimate begins with the net cladding area and then evaluates how the actual ASCEND panels will be laid out and cut. Current manufacturer literature lists ASCEND 7-inch Plank at 12 feet 3 inches long with a 7-inch exposure and 14 planks per carton. ASCEND 12-inch Board & Batten is 12 feet long with a 12-inch exposure and eight panels per carton, providing 0.96 square—or approximately 96 square feet—per carton.1

ASCEND Waste Estimating at a Glance

  2. Calculate gross wall area.
  3. Subtract only openings that create meaningful reusable savings.

Does ASCEND Publish a Standard Waste Percentage?

The current ASCEND technical summaries and installation resources identify panel dimensions, carton quantities, required cuts, overlaps, clearances, and installation procedures. They do not establish one manufacturer-mandated waste percentage for every building.

Waste must therefore be estimated from the actual project geometry. A contractor may use an internal percentage as an early budgeting allowance, but the final order should be tested against a panel-by-panel or elevation-by-elevation cut plan.

The Critical Distinction

A waste percentage is an estimating shortcut. A cut plan is evidence that the ordered quantity can actually cover the building.

Start with Gross Wall Area

Measure the width and height of every rectangular wall section. Calculate triangles, trapezoids, dormers, and other shapes separately rather than forcing the entire elevation into one rough rectangle.

Common Area Formulas

  • Rectangle: Width × Height
  • Triangle: Width × Height ÷ 2
  • Trapezoid: Average of the two parallel sides × Height

Keep measurements organized by elevation, profile, color, and texture. Combining every wall into one total too early hides where short pieces, angle cuts, or profile transitions will create waste.

Should Every Window and Door Be Subtracted?

Not automatically. Large garage doors, patio doors, and broad window assemblies may justify a full deduction. Small openings may not create equivalent material savings because full panels still pass above, below, or beside them and produce short offcuts.

An opening can reduce covered wall area while simultaneously increasing cutting waste. The estimator must consider both effects.

Large Opening

May create enough uninterrupted omitted area to support a substantial square-foot deduction.

Small Opening

May save little usable material after header cuts, sill cuts, side pieces, overlap placement, and minimum reusable lengths are considered.

How Do You Calculate the Base Material Quantity?

Net cladding area = gross wall area − qualifying opening deductions

Adjusted area = net cladding area × (1 + selected waste allowance)

Cartons required = adjusted area ÷ published carton coverage

Round carton quantities up. ASCEND cannot be ordered as a fraction of a sealed carton unless the distributor specifically offers individual material.

How Much Does a Carton Cover?

These are nominal coverage figures before project waste. They do not guarantee that every square foot in a carton can be used on a particular elevation.

Why 7-Inch Plank Waste Is Layout-Dependent

ASCEND 7-inch Plank is installed horizontally. The current technical summary lists a plank length of 12 feet 3 inches. Wall lengths, corner locations, openings, and overlap placement determine whether the remaining piece from one cut can begin or complete another run.1

The published lap procedure also requires the under-plank to receive a complete field cut and maintain the prescribed overlap. The estimator should not count the nominal plank length as unrestricted wall coverage without accounting for the lap detail.2

Plank Waste Commonly Comes From:

  • Field-cut under-plank overlaps
  • Short wall returns
  • Window and door cuts
  • Gable-angle cuts
  • Final courses beneath soffits
  • Roof-to-wall intersections
  • Color and profile transitions

Account for the Plank Overlap

ASCEND requires a specific over-plank and under-plank procedure. The under-plank receives a straight flush cut through the nail hem and foam before being installed behind the factory overlap edge. The overlap is maintained according to the current installation guide.2

Do not calculate horizontal coverage by placing nominal panel lengths end to end with no allowance for the lap. Doing so overstates the useful run length and can leave the project short.

Why Board & Batten Waste Behaves Differently

ASCEND Board & Batten is installed vertically. Each panel has a 12-inch exposure and is 12 feet long. Unlike horizontal Plank, Board & Batten panels cannot be overlapped to create additional height.3

Panel height and wall height therefore have a major effect on waste. A wall just under 12 feet may use most of each panel efficiently. A wall substantially shorter than 12 feet creates a longer offcut from every vertical panel.

Board & Batten Waste Commonly Comes From:

  • Panel-length reductions on short walls
  • Sloped gable cuts
  • Window and door interruptions
  • Rip cuts at left and right terminations
  • Balanced-layout requirements
  • Panels cut through the board or batten portion
  • Profile transitions and accent walls
  • Offcuts that cannot satisfy another panel height

Gables Can Create Significant Waste

Gables produce changing panel lengths and angled cuts. For 7-inch Plank, separate angle patterns are created for the two roof slopes. For Board & Batten, the panel layout should be centered and balanced before panels are cut.4

A gable should not receive the same automatic waste assumption as a rectangular wall. Draw the panel courses or vertical panel positions and determine whether opposite-slope or progressive offcuts can be reused.

  • Are both slopes identical?
  • Can a left-slope offcut be used on the right side?
  • Does the surface texture or factory edge control orientation?
  • Will the remaining piece retain a usable nail hem or locking edge?
  • Can an offcut satisfy the required panel height elsewhere?
  • Does the Board & Batten layout need a centered peak batten?

Can Window and Door Offcuts Be Reused?

Sometimes. Reuse depends on the offcut’s length, shape, factory edges, lock condition, nail hem, color, texture, and the next required cut.

Do not count every square foot removed from a window opening as reusable material. A panel cut into an L-shape or narrow strip may have substantial area on paper while providing no practical value elsewhere.

Use a Cut Map

A cut map assigns full panels and likely offcuts to specific wall locations. It forces the estimator to prove where the material will go instead of assuming every remainder can be used.

A Useful Cut Map Should Show:

  • Elevation and wall dimensions
  • Panel direction
  • Course or vertical-panel layout
  • Window and door positions
  • Overlap locations
  • Factory-edge requirements
  • Gable slopes and patterns
  • Planned reuse of substantial offcuts
  • Pieces reserved for short returns or narrow areas

The following ranges are practical estimating starting points—not manufacturer requirements. They should be replaced by a project-specific cut analysis before ordering.

Selected project-specific waste allowance: 10%

Adjusted quantity: 2,400 × 1.10 = 2,640 square feet

Approximate carton coverage: 100 square feet

Calculated cartons: 2,640 ÷ 100 = 26.4 cartons

Minimum order: 27 cartons

The 10% allowance in this example is an estimating decision—not an ASCEND requirement. The contractor should still confirm the result against wall lengths, overlap placement, gables, openings, and carton availability.

Example: Board & Batten Estimate

Net Board & Batten area: 864 square feet

Selected project-specific allowance: 12%

Adjusted quantity: 864 × 1.12 = 967.68 square feet

Published carton coverage: 96 square feet

Calculated cartons: 967.68 ÷ 96 = 10.08 cartons

Minimum order: 11 cartons

Before ordering, check the panel heights and centered layout. Eleven cartons may be adequate by area but still insufficient if repeated height cuts create offcuts that cannot be reused.

Carton Rounding Can Become the Real Waste Factor

Small accent areas can produce a high percentage of apparent excess because the material must be purchased in complete cartons.

For example, a Board & Batten accent needing 100 square feet requires more than one 96-square-foot carton. Purchasing two cartons provides 192 nominal square feet even before cutting. The excess is caused primarily by packaging—not poor estimating.

Keep Profiles, Colors, and Textures Separate

Material from one profile, color, or texture cannot automatically offset a shortage in another. Calculate each combination separately.

Separate Quantities For:

  • 7-inch Plank and Board & Batten
  • Cedar Mill Grain and Matte textures
  • Each color
  • Main elevations and accent elevations
  • Replacement stock intended for a specific facade

Should Repair Stock Be Added?

Keeping a small amount of properly stored matching material can simplify a future repair. Colors, textures, product configurations, and production runs may change over the life of the home.

Repair stock should be clearly labeled and stored according to ASCEND’s published storage instructions. Do not leave unsupported panels leaning vertically in a garage or attic.5

Do Not Use Damaged Material to Reduce Waste

ASCEND instructs installers to inspect cladding for breakage, foreign objects, surface defects, color consistency, and correctness before installation. Questionable product should not be installed simply to keep the waste number low.6

Installing a damaged panel is not material efficiency. It converts visible waste into a concealed service risk.
