Installing ASCEND Composite Cladding around windows and doors begins with the wall system behind the cladding—not with the finished trim. The opening must first be properly integrated with a code-compliant weather-resistant barrier and flashing system. Compatible receiving channels or ASCEND window and door surrounds are then installed around the opening, drainage paths are preserved, and the cladding is cut with the required profile-specific expansion clearances.1

The appearance of the finished window or door is important, but appearance cannot outrank water management. A perfectly cut panel will not protect a wall if the sill, jambs, head flashing, weather-resistant barrier, or receiving channels were installed incorrectly.

ASCEND serves as exterior cladding and a supplemental rainscreen. It is not the primary weather-resistant barrier. Water that reaches the drainage plane must be directed over lower flashing layers and back to the exterior.2

Contractors may also encounter approved cellular PVC trim or other project-specific trim systems. These assemblies must provide a compatible receiving pocket, proper flashing, adequate drainage, and sufficient room for the ASCEND profile.

Drill Weep Holes in Horizontal J-Channel

When J-channel is installed horizontally with its nail hem at the top, ASCEND requires minimum 3/16-inch-diameter weep holes. The full guide identifies spacing of approximately 12 to 24 inches for these drainage openings, while its general instructions also reference 24-inch spacing.5

The controlling point is not merely drilling the holes. They must remain unobstructed after the channel, flashing, cladding, and finish trim are installed.

  • Follow the current guide for required spacing.
  • Position holes in the base of the horizontal channel.
  • Keep the channel separated from head flashing.
  • Do not fill drainage openings with caulk.

How Much Clearance Does 7-Inch Plank Need?

ASCEND 7-inch Plank requires a 3/8-inch clearance between the cladding and all receiving channels, including those around windows, doors, corners, and other obstacles.6

The factory notch that is not adhered to the foam must be removed before inserting the plank into receiving channels at windows, doors, corners, and other obstacles. The panel should enter the channel without being forced tightly against the back of the pocket.

For 7-Inch Plank Around an Opening

  • Install the receiving channels first.
  • Measure from the backsides or inside edges of the channels.
  • Include 3/8-inch clearance on each required side.
  • Remove the applicable factory notch.
  • Do not stretch the plank into the opening.
  • Confirm that the cut edge remains concealed by the channel.

How Much Clearance Does Board & Batten Need?

ASCEND 12-inch Board & Batten requires 1/4 inch at the top receiving channel and 1/2 inch at the bottom channel. At vertical receiving channels beside windows and doors, maintain the profile’s required horizontal clearance, commonly 1/4 inch in the manufacturer’s Board & Batten details.7

Do not cut a vertical panel tightly between the top and bottom channels. The panel must hang from its first fastener and retain room for movement and drainage.

Above the Opening

Maintain 1/4 inch between the top of the Board & Batten panel and the upper receiving channel.

Below the Opening

Maintain 1/2 inch between the bottom of the Board & Batten panel and the lower receiving channel.

How Do You Measure a Plank Below a Window?

A plank below a window is commonly rip-cut along its upper edge. Measure from the previously installed course to the inside of the sill receiving channel, then transfer that measurement to the panel while accounting for the profile geometry and required clearance.

If the top nail hem is removed by the rip cut, the plank may require ASCEND finish trim to preserve projection and secure the cut edge inside the sill channel.

Below-Window Process

  1. Install the sill receiving channel.
  2. Measure from the installed course to the inside of the sill channel.
  3. Account for the required 3/8-inch clearance.
  4. Mark the panel with a straightedge.
  5. Make the horizontal rip cut.
  6. Install finish trim when the top nail hem is removed and the detail requires it.
  7. Insert the cut edge without forcing it tightly into the channel.
  8. Confirm the plank retains proper projection and lies flat.

How Do You Measure a Plank Above a Window or Door?

A plank above an opening may require removal of part of the lower butt and stack-lock area. ASCEND directs installers to measure from the backside of the receiving channel to the face of the previously installed plank and transfer the measurement to the panel while accounting for its profile dimensions.

The cut must extend across the opening width while also preserving the required 3/8-inch clearance on both sides. When the bottom stack lock is removed, finish trim is generally used to support the cut edge and maintain the intended panel projection.8

When Is ASCEND Finish Trim Required?

For 7-inch Plank, ASCEND finish trim is used on horizontal surfaces above and below windows, doors, and similar obstacles when the panel’s top nail hem or bottom stack lock has been removed. The guide identifies finish trim for spans greater than one foot and states that finish trim is inserted into the sill or header receiving channel after panel-cut measurements have been taken.9

ASCEND also states that finish trim should not be installed vertically with 7-inch Plank.

Use Finish Trim When:

  • The top nail hem has been removed below an opening.
  • The bottom stack lock has been removed above an opening.
  • The cut panel needs support to maintain its projection.
  • The horizontal span meets the manufacturer’s finish-trim requirements.
  • A profile-specific detail expressly requires it.

When Is Finish Trim Not Required for 7-Inch Plank?

ASCEND provides an exception when a horizontal cut above an obstacle occurs within the bottom 1-1/2 inches of the plank. In that condition, up to 1-1/2 inches of the plank butt may be inserted into the receiving channel without finish trim.10

This is a specific exception—not permission to omit finish trim from every rip-cut panel. The cut location and remaining panel geometry control the decision.

Drill Weep Holes in Finish Trim Where Required

The ASCEND installation guide directs installers to drill 3/16-inch weep holes in finish trim used at window, door, and obstacle headers and sills. The finish trim is inserted into the receiving channel after the measurements for the horizontal panel cuts have been completed.11

Do not assume that an inner trim component can block the drainage openings simply because the outer J-channel has already been drilled.

How Is Board & Batten Cut Around Windows and Doors?

ASCEND Board & Batten panels may require vertical rip cuts when they meet window and door jamb channels. The manufacturer instructs installers to use the same finish-trim and clearance rules used for a rip-cut first panel when the affected span is greater than 12 inches.12

Finish trim is generally used when the flat board portion of the panel enters a vertical receiving channel and the original locking or fastening support has been removed. Finish trim is generally not required when the raised batten portion enters the channel.

Avoid Plank Overlaps Directly Above and Below Openings

When planning the 7-inch Plank layout, ASCEND advises that the first overlap should not occur in planks immediately above or below windows, doors, or other obstacles. Subsequent overlaps in those locations may require shimming to maintain the correct plank projection and secure fit within the J-channel.13

This is a layout issue that should be solved before the wall reaches the opening. Discovering a poorly positioned overlap after several courses are installed creates avoidable cutting and alignment problems.

Do Not Fasten Through Another Product’s Nail Flange

ASCEND warns installers not to fasten through the nailing flanges of other materials or accessories. Where J-channel flanges intersect another accessory flange, the flange should be cut back according to the installation guide rather than stacked and pinned together.14

Stacking moving flanges and driving one fastener through both can restrict expansion, distort the trim, and create an incorrect wall buildup.

Do Not Hard-Nail the Cladding or Trim

ASCEND fasteners must be left approximately 1/32 inch above the nail hem so the cladding and accessories can move as exterior temperatures change.15

Correct panel length does not protect the installation when the nail hem has been clamped tightly to the wall. Expansion clearance and fastener-head clearance must work together.

Do Not Fill Movement Pockets with Caulk

Required panel clearances should not be filled with caulk, adhesive, spray foam, or another rigid material unless the controlling ASCEND detail specifically requires it. Filling a receiving pocket can bond the panel to the trim and block movement or drainage.

Sealants may still be required within the underlying window, door, flashing, or weather-resistant-barrier system. That is different from sealing the finished ASCEND panel tightly into its receiving channel.
