How Do You Install ASCEND Outside Corners?

ASCEND outside corner posts are installed before the cladding panels and must be positioned, flashed, and fastened so they can move as temperatures change. The manufacturer directs installers to flash the inside and outside corner area at least 10 inches onto each adjoining wall, extend the open bottom of the post at least 3/4 inch below the starter strip, leave 1/4 inch beneath the soffit, place the first fastener at the top of the uppermost slot, and center the remaining fasteners every 8 to 12 inches.1

Outside corners are highly visible architectural details, but their real job extends beyond appearance. The corner post receives and conceals the cut ends of the cladding on both walls, helps preserve the required movement clearance, and completes the transition where two exterior elevations meet.

A corner post that is installed crooked, hard-nailed, poorly flashed, or cut tightly against the soffit can distort as temperatures change. It can also make every plank or Board & Batten panel entering the corner appear uneven.

ASCEND Outside Corner Installation at a Glance

  1. Inspect and prepare the corner substrate.
  2. Install the weather-resistant barrier and corner flashing.
  3. Extend the corner flashing at least 10 inches onto both adjoining walls.

Start with a Sound Corner

Before installing the corner accessory, inspect both adjoining walls. The corner must provide a solid fastening surface and should be straight enough to support a plumb corner post.

Do not use the outside corner post to conceal rotten sheathing, damaged framing, active water intrusion, or severe wall irregularities. Repair those conditions before the accessory is installed.

Corner-Preparation Checklist

  • Framing and sheathing are sound.
  • Loose materials have been removed or secured.
  • Rot, mold, and moisture damage have been corrected.
  • The corner provides an acceptable fastening substrate.
  • The two wall planes meet cleanly.
  • The corner can be made reasonably straight and plumb.
  • Window, door, roofline, and deck flashing near the corner is complete.
  • The weather-resistant barrier is installed correctly.

Flash the Corner Before Installing the Post

ASCEND’s installation guide requires a water-resistive material to flash the inside and outside corner area a minimum of 10 inches on each adjoining wall before the outside corner post is installed.2

The corner post is not the wall’s weather-resistant barrier. It is an exterior accessory installed over the drainage plane. Any incidental water reaching the area behind the post must be managed by the properly installed barrier and flashing system.

Corner Flashing Should:

  • Extend at least 10 inches onto each wall.
  • Remain integrated with the surrounding weather-resistant barrier.
  • Direct water toward the exterior.
  • Remain free of tears, holes, and unsealed penetrations.
  • Integrate correctly with nearby roof, deck, window, or door flashing.
  • Be photographed before the corner post conceals it.

Which ASCEND Outside Corner Post Should Be Used?

Current ASCEND accessory literature lists a 3-1/2-inch outside corner post designed to coordinate with the ASCEND cladding system. Current manufacturer literature identifies a 12-foot post length and a receiving pocket designed around ASCEND’s approximately 3/4-inch panel projection.3

Contractors should verify the current product code, color, texture, length, packaging, and availability before ordering. Do not assume a shallow conventional siding corner will accept the full ASCEND profile correctly.

Measure the Corner-Post Length

Measure from the lower termination point to the soffit, eave, or upper receiving accessory. The final post length must account for movement clearance at the top and the required extension below the starter strip.

At the top, leave 1/4 inch between the corner post and the soffit. At the bottom of a standard wall, extend the open post end at least 3/4 inch below the starter-strip level so it covers the exposed ends of the cladding.4

Top of Corner Post

Leave 1/4 inch beneath the soffit or upper termination so the corner post can expand without becoming trapped.

Bottom of Corner Post

Extend the open end at least 3/4 inch below the starter strip to cover the lower siding edge.

What Clearance Is Needed at Decks, Rooflines, and Masonry?

When an outside corner post terminates above a deck, porch, roofline, brick ledge, stone ledge, or another fixed surface, preserve the clearance required by the current ASCEND installation detail rather than extending the post into direct contact with the surface.

The full installation guide identifies a 3/8-inch clearance at several lower corner-post termination conditions. Cladding and accessories must also remain at least 1/2 inch above grade and concrete slabs.5

Never Rest the Corner Post Directly On:

  • Concrete slabs
  • Porch surfaces
  • Decking
  • Roof shingles
  • Step flashing
  • Brick or stone ledges
  • Grade or landscaping materials

Position the Corner Post Plumb

Hold the corner post against the prepared corner and check it for plumb on both adjoining walls. A post can appear straight from one elevation while leaning on the other.

Confirm the receiving pockets remain evenly positioned and are not being twisted around an irregular corner. Correct major wall-plane problems instead of forcing the accessory to follow them.

Before Installing the First Fastener

  • Verify the top clearance.
  • Verify the bottom extension or termination clearance.
  • Check the post for plumb on the first wall.
  • Check the post for plumb on the adjoining wall.
  • Confirm the post is not bowed or twisted.
  • Verify both receiving pockets remain open and undamaged.
  • Confirm the flashing remains flat behind the accessory.

Where Is the First Fastener Placed?

Place the first fastener in the uppermost portion of the top nail slot. This lets the vertical corner post hang from the first fastener while allowing it to move downward as temperatures change.6

Do not center the first fastener when the manufacturer’s vertical-accessory detail requires it at the top of the slot. The hanging method is intentional.

How Far Apart Are the Remaining Fasteners?

Center the remaining fasteners in their nail slots every 8 to 12 inches. Drive each fastener straight and into the approved nailable substrate.6

The remaining fasteners are centered so the corner post can move in either direction within the slots. Placing every fastener at the top or bottom of its slot can restrict movement.

Corner-Post Fastening Pattern

  1. Place the first fastener at the top of the uppermost nail slot.
  2. Confirm the post is still plumb.
  3. Center the remaining fasteners in their slots.
  4. Space the remaining fasteners every 8 to 12 inches.
  5. Use approved corrosion-resistant fasteners.
  6. Maintain the required substrate penetration.
  7. Leave approximately 1/32 inch beneath each fastener head.
  8. Confirm the corner post can move within the slots.

Do Not Hard-Nail the Corner Post

ASCEND requires approximately 1/32 inch between the fastener head and the corner-post nail hem. The post should not be clamped tightly to the wall.7

Hard-nailing can cause the corner accessory to bow, ripple, buckle, pull away from the cladding, or develop stress around its fastening slots. Darker colors can make distortion especially visible.

Maintain Cladding Clearance Inside the Corner Post

The corner-post pockets receive the cut ends of ASCEND panels, but those panels must not be cut tightly against the back of the accessory.

ASCEND 7-inch Plank requires a 3/8-inch clearance between the plank and channeled accessories, including outside corner posts. Board & Batten uses its profile-specific receiving-channel clearance.8

Proper Panel Fit at the Corner

  • The panel end remains concealed inside the pocket.
  • The panel is not forced against the back of the post.
  • The required expansion clearance remains present.
  • The panel lies flat against the wall.
  • The lock remains fully engaged.
  • The corner post is not pushed outward by an oversized panel.

How Do You Join Corner Posts on a Tall Wall?

When one corner post is not long enough, ASCEND provides a specific overlapping procedure. The composite corner post has recessed foam along its trailing edge to receive the prepared lower post.9

The piece containing the recessed foam is used as the upper post. Do not cut back the foam on a previously altered piece in an attempt to create another overlap. The manufacturer directs installers to use a new post with the factory recessed-foam condition for each overlap.

ASCEND Corner-Post Overlap Procedure

  1. Use the post with factory-recessed foam as the upper corner post.
  2. Position the lower corner post beneath it.
  3. At the top of the lower post, remove 1 inch from the nail flanges and channels.
  4. Keep the visible face of the lower outside corner intact.
  5. Overlap the upper post 5/8 inch over the lower post.
  6. Maintain a 3/8-inch gap between the two corner-post nail hems.
  7. Make sure the lower post and its foam do not contact the upper post’s foam.
  8. Check the assembled corner for plumb and clean alignment.
  9. Fasten both pieces according to the vertical-accessory fastening requirements.

Why Is the Lower Post Cut Back One Inch?

ASCEND directs installers to remove 1 inch from the nail flanges and receiving channels at the top of the lower corner post while keeping its visible exterior face intact. This creates room for the upper post to overlap without doubling the internal channel and fastening components.

Cutting through the visible face would produce an exposed seam and defeat the intended overlap detail.

Why Is the Overlap Five-Eighths of an Inch?

The manufacturer specifies a 5/8-inch overlap of the upper corner post over the lower post. The overlap conceals the joint while allowing the components to remain independent enough to accommodate thermal movement.

The nail hems must remain separated by 3/8 inch, and the foam components must not contact one another. A tightly packed joint can restrict expansion and create visible distortion.

Can the Bottom of the Corner Post Be Folded into a Cap?

ASCEND instructs installers not to cap the corner by cutting and folding the corner post itself. The installation guide warns that this can cause stress whitening, particularly on dark-colored surfaces.10

When a corner enclosure is needed, fabricate a separate cap from J-channel or compatible trim coil instead of manipulating the finished corner-post face.

J-Channel Cap

Cut and notch a section of J-channel, fold it into the required shape, and set the cap inside the corner post. Caulk or rivets may be used where permitted to secure the separate cap.

Trim-Coil Cap

Fabricate a separate trim-coil piece to fit inside the post. The exposed edge may be shaped to match the desired appearance and secured according to the manufacturer’s detail.

Should the Corner Post Be Caulked to the Cladding?

Do not fill the corner-post receiving pockets with caulk, adhesive, or spray foam. The cladding ends require room to move inside the accessory.

Sealants may be used in underlying flashing details or to secure a separately fabricated corner cap where the ASCEND instructions permit them. That does not mean the cladding should be bonded into the post.

Can Outside Corners Be Made with Trim Boards?

Project-specific architectural details may use one-piece corner boards or routed cellular PVC assemblies instead of the standard ASCEND composite corner post. ASCEND’s architectural details recommend properly sized one-piece corner boards for certain trim-board installations.11

Any alternate corner assembly must provide compatible receiving pockets, preserve drainage, maintain the required panel clearance, and comply with the current ASCEND installation guide and project specifications.

Common ASCEND Outside-Corner Mistakes

  • Installing the corner post before completing the weather-resistant barrier
  • Failing to flash at least 10 inches onto both adjoining walls
  • Using the corner post to hide rotten or damaged sheathing
  • Cutting the post tightly against the soffit
  • Failing to extend the open post below the starter strip
  • Allowing the post to rest directly on concrete, decking, or roofing
  • Checking plumb on only one wall

Inspect the Corner Before Installing the Cladding

Once panels are installed on both walls, the corner-post nail hems, flashing, and many fastening details become difficult to inspect. Complete a quality-control review before covering them.

Outside-Corner Inspection Checklist

  • Corner flashing extends at least 10 inches onto each wall.
  • The weather-resistant barrier remains properly integrated.
  • The corner post is plumb on both elevations.
  • The post is not bowed, twisted, or damaged.
  • One-quarter inch remains beneath the soffit.
  • The lower post position or clearance is correct.
  • The first fastener is at the top of the uppermost slot.
  • The remaining fasteners are centered every 8 to 12 inches.
  • Approximately 1/32 inch remains beneath the fastener heads.
  • Both receiving pockets remain open.
  • Any overlap follows the 1-inch, 5/8-inch, and 3/8-inch requirements.
  • No foam-to-foam contact exists at an overlapping joint.

Document the Concealed Corner Details

Photograph the corner before and after the post is installed. These records can support quality control, future service work, panel replacement, and possible warranty questions.

How Can Improper Corner Installation Affect Warranty Coverage?

ASCEND warns that failure to follow its written installation instructions and applicable building codes can affect product performance and warranty coverage. Corner distortion, cracking, moisture problems, panel buckling, or accessory damage caused by improper flashing, hard-nailing, inadequate clearance, or an incorrect overlap may be treated as installation issues rather than manufacturing defects.12

The material warranty does not erase the installing contractor’s responsibility to build the corner correctly.
