The NFRC label can include U-Factor, Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, Visible Transmittance, Air Leakage, and Condensation Resistance. Not every field is necessarily displayed on every label, and not every metric is mandatory for every program.

The rating belongs to an identified product configuration. Changing the glass package, operating style, grid, gas fill, spacer, frame, or other components can change the values.

U-Factor: Resistance to Heat Flow

U-Factor measures the rate of heat transfer through the complete fenestration product. It includes the effects of the glass, spacer, sash, and frame—not only the center portion of the glass.

A lower U-Factor indicates less heat transfer under the standardized rating procedure. In a heating-dominated climate, a lower value can help reduce heat loss through the window and improve comfort near the opening.

U-Factor and SHGC Must Be Considered Together

Lower U-Factor

Indicates reduced heat transfer through the complete product under standardized conditions.

Lower SHGC

Indicates that less solar heat is admitted through the product.

A glass package can improve one number differently from another. Contractors should compare both ratings and avoid selling solely from the most impressive-looking value.

Visible Transmittance

Visible Transmittance, or VT, measures how much visible light passes through the product. A higher number indicates more transmitted daylight under the standardized rating procedure.

Low-E coatings, additional panes, tints, grids, frame area, and other design choices can influence VT. A high-performance triple-pane package may not admit exactly the same amount of visible light as a basic clear dual-pane unit.

This does not make one configuration universally better. A bright living area may benefit from more daylight, while a west-facing room with glare concerns may benefit from stronger solar control. Product samples and actual label values help homeowners understand the tradeoff.

Air Leakage on the NFRC Label

The NFRC Air Leakage rating measures air passing through the product’s joints under prescribed laboratory conditions. Lower values indicate less measured air leakage through the tested product.

This rating should not be confused with air passing around the installed window. Gaps between the frame and rough opening, missing insulation, failed sealant, incomplete air-barrier connections, and poor installation can create drafts that the product rating does not include.

Condensation Resistance

What ENERGY STAR Certification Means

The AAMA Gold Label Certification Program addresses a different performance category from the NFRC energy label.

According to FGIA, a certified product sample is tested at an independent accredited laboratory under the applicable North American Fenestration Standard or predecessor requirements. Testing addresses prescribed air-leakage limits, water penetration, structural resistance, component requirements, and life-cycle durability where applicable.

FGIA also reports that certified manufacturing locations receive two typically unannounced inspections per year to verify that production continues to follow the authorized design and quality procedures.

A product is not considered certified under this program merely because its manufacturer has other certified products. FGIA states that the product must be properly labeled. Contractors should preserve labels and supporting records until inspections and project documentation are complete.
