Double 4-Inch Clapboard: A Finer Exterior Rhythm

Double 4-inch clapboard presents two approximately 4-inch horizontal faces within each panel. Of the four SteelTek Supreme choices, it creates the greatest number of visible horizontal courses across a wall.

That tighter repetition can work well on smaller houses, traditional elevations and homes with several windows or architectural interruptions. The narrower scale generally feels familiar because it resembles the proportions associated with traditional lap siding.

Consider Double 4-inch when:

• The home has a modest wall height or compact proportions.
• The goal is a detailed, traditional exterior.
• Narrow window and door trim already establishes a finer visual scale.
• The homeowner wants the roughsawn texture repeated across more closely spaced courses.

The tradeoff is visual activity. On a large, uninterrupted wall, numerous narrow courses may create more horizontal lines than the design needs. That is not a defect; it is a question of proportion.

Double 5-Inch Clapboard: A Middle-Ground Proportion

Double 5-inch clapboard uses two broader horizontal faces. The difference from Double 4-inch may sound minor, but the cumulative effect becomes noticeable across an entire elevation. There are fewer horizontal divisions, and each course carries slightly more visual weight.

This profile can be a useful middle ground for homeowners who want a recognizable clapboard appearance without the busier rhythm of a narrower exposure. It can suit ranch homes, two-story suburban homes and renovations where the design needs to remain traditional but feel less finely divided.

Consider Double 5-inch when:

• The house has medium-to-large wall areas.
• A conventional clapboard appearance is desired.
• The homeowner prefers fewer horizontal lines than Double 4-inch provides.

Double 5-inch is not automatically the “safe” choice. It still needs to be viewed against the home's window sizes, foundation height and roof mass. A profile that looks balanced on a sample board can look different when repeated over several hundred square feet.

8-Inch Clapboard: Broad Horizontal Definition

The 8-inch clapboard profile creates broad individual horizontal courses. Compared with the double profiles, it places fewer lines across the wall and gives each course a more substantial presence.

Wider clapboard can visually reinforce the length of a ranch-style home or calm a large, uninterrupted elevation. It may also complement homes with heavier window trim, broad roof overhangs or masonry elements that would visually overpower a narrower siding pattern.

Consider 8-inch clapboard when:

• The home has long horizontal proportions.
• Large walls need a simpler, less repetitive siding pattern.
• The trim and architectural details are broad or visually substantial.
• The desired exterior is traditional but comparatively restrained.

Wider is not inherently more modern or more expensive-looking. On a small elevation, an 8-inch course can feel oversized. The correct scale depends on the house rather than a universal design rule.

12-Inch Vertical Board-and-Batten: Height and Contrast

SteelTek Supreme's 12-inch vertical board-and-batten profile replaces horizontal courses with upright lines. Gentek includes it as one of the collection's four distinct profiles, finished with the same roughsawn visual character described in the product brochure.

Vertical lines naturally draw the eye upward. This can make a gable feel taller, give a low addition more presence or distinguish one architectural volume from another. Board-and-batten is frequently associated with farmhouse design, but it can also appear clean and contemporary when used with simple trim and a restrained color palette.

Consider board-and-batten when:

• A front gable needs stronger architectural emphasis.
• The design would benefit from an intentional change in siding direction.
• A porch, entry or addition needs to read as a separate volume.
• The homeowner wants an all-vertical farmhouse or contemporary exterior.

Board-and-batten should not be added as an arbitrary accent simply because it is popular. If the transition does not correspond with a real corner, gable, roofline or other architectural break, the result can look applied rather than integrated.

One Profile or a Mixed-Profile Exterior?

A single profile creates continuity and is often the most disciplined choice for a simple house. Mixing horizontal clapboard with vertical board-and-batten can add interest, but every change needs a clear reason.

Strong places to change profiles include:

• A front-facing gable separated by a horizontal trim board
• A porch or entry volume with defined inside and outside corners
• A garage wing that projects from the primary house
• An upper story divided by an intentional band board

Weak places to change profiles include:

• The middle of an uninterrupted wall
• A narrow strip with no architectural purpose
• Every available gable regardless of size or visibility
• Locations where the transition creates awkward flashing or trim details

Profile Selection Does Not Change the Wall’s Insulation by Itself

A wider or vertical SteelTek Supreme profile should not be assumed to provide greater insulation than another profile. The siding is the exterior cladding, while meaningful thermal performance depends on the complete wall assembly—cavity insulation, exterior insulation, air sealing, sheathing and treatment of penetrations.

If energy performance is a project goal, the contractor should evaluate the wall behind the siding. Choosing 8-inch clapboard instead of Double 4-inch is primarily a design decision, not an insulation upgrade.

Installation Planning for Mixed Orientations

Gentek states that SteelTek Supreme's rigid steel construction helps produce straight wall lines and that its 1/2-inch panel projection creates pronounced edges and shadow lines. Achieving that appearance still depends on proper preparation and installation.

• Confirm that the substrate and supporting wall are suitable for the selected profile.
• Plan profile transitions, corners, openings and trim before ordering material.
• Follow Gentek's current requirements for fastening, clearances, cutting and panel engagement.
• Integrate flashing and the water-resistive barrier with windows, doors and penetrations.
• Do not assume that vertical siding can be installed exactly like horizontal clapboard.
• Verify that accessories and trim colors are available for the selected siding color and profile.

The Polymeric Exterior Products Association and Vinyl Siding Institute publish valuable installation resources for polymeric and vinyl cladding. However, those instructions should not be substituted for Gentek's steel siding requirements. SteelTek Supreme is steel, so the product manufacturer's steel-specific instructions and applicable building requirements control the installation.

Will the Profile Affect Resale?

No responsible supplier can promise that one siding profile will produce a specific increase in resale value. Market results depend on location, installation quality, the home's condition, buyer preferences and the overall coherence of the exterior.

What a profile can do is support stronger curb appeal when its scale fits the house. A disciplined design with intentional transitions is less likely to look dated than an exterior assembled from several trends without regard to the underlying architecture.

A Practical Selection Process

1. Photograph each elevation. Do not make the decision using only the front of the house.
2. Identify the home's dominant proportions. Determine whether it reads as primarily horizontal, vertical or balanced.
3. Mark legitimate architectural breaks. These are the locations where a profile change might make sense.
4. Compare physical samples outdoors. Evaluate texture, color and shadow in sun and shade.
