What Kynar PVDF Actually Means

PVDF stands for polyvinylidene fluoride. Kynar is an Arkema trademark used for a family of PVDF resins. In architectural metal coatings, the resin becomes part of a formulated, factory-applied finish rather than acting as a bare sheet placed over the steel.

Arkema describes Kynar 500® PVDF-based architectural coatings as factory-applied, oven-baked finishes formulated by licensed coating manufacturers and applied by approved applicators. Arkema associates these coatings with long-term weather resistance and color retention.

That background helps explain why PVDF is used as a premium architectural-metal finish. It does not mean every PVDF-labeled coating is identical or that Arkema independently guarantees every finished SteelTek Supreme installation. Gentek’s product literature and warranty control the claims for Gentek siding.

What Gentek Says About the SteelTek Supreme Finish

Gentek describes SteelTek Supreme’s Kynar PVDF system as low-gloss, durable, weatherable, and resistant to scratches, fading, chalking, staining, pitting, chipping, dirt adhesion, mildew, and fungus growth.

Gentek also states that the SteelTek Supreme finish incorporates an additive intended to improve scuff resistance compared with PVC finishes. That is a specific manufacturer comparison. It should be reported as Gentek’s published product claim—not expanded into a promise that the panel cannot be scuffed or scratched.

Coating performance still depends on fabrication, transport, storage, installation, cleaning, chemical exposure, physical impacts, and preservation of the factory finish.

What the SteelTek PVC Finish Means

Gentek states that SteelTek’s Galvalume AZ-50 steel is primed and heat-fused with a thick PVC coating. PVC in this context describes the factory-applied panel finish. It should not be confused with PVC vinyl siding, which is manufactured primarily as a rigid plastic panel.

SteelTek remains a steel cladding product. Its strength, rigidity, fire characteristics, dimensional behavior, cut-edge concerns, and fastening requirements come from the complete steel-panel system—not from the coating name alone.

The PVC finish can be a responsible choice when its appearance, available colors, written warranty, and project cost meet the homeowner’s needs. “PVC finish” should not be used as shorthand for poor quality any more than “PVDF” should be treated as shorthand for indestructibility.

The Coating Is Only One Layer of Protection

Both systems rely on several elements working together:

1. The steel substrate provides strength and rigidity.
2. The Galvalume AZ-50 metallic coating contributes corrosion protection.
3. Primers and other treatment layers support the coating system.
4. The Kynar PVDF or PVC finish provides the exposed color, texture, and an additional protective surface.
5. Correct fabrication, transport, installation, and maintenance preserve the system.

Comparing only the outer coating ignores panel thickness, yield strength, metallic coating, profile geometry, and installation. The Metal Construction Association recommends evaluating those characteristics together when specifying steel cladding.

SteelTek Supreme Offers More Design Choices

The clearest functional difference may be profile availability rather than coating chemistry.

• D4 Clapboard: available in both lines for a familiar horizontal rhythm.
• 8-inch Single: available in both lines for a wider horizontal-board appearance.
• D5 Clapboard: currently offered only in SteelTek Supreme.
• 12-inch Board-and-Batten: currently offered only in SteelTek Supreme.

If a Davenport homeowner wants vertical steel siding, SteelTek Supreme is the relevant line to evaluate. If the approved design uses D4 or 8-inch horizontal siding, both lines remain candidates and should be compared as complete proposals.

Texture and Gloss Affect Perceived Color

SteelTek Supreme’s horizontal profiles use a roughsawn texture, while its Board-and-Batten profile uses a medium woodgrain texture. SteelTek uses a woodgrain texture. The coating systems also produce their own surface character.

Two panels with similar color names may not look identical when their profile, texture, gloss, and orientation differ. Gentek itself cautions that color, texture, and grain can appear different according to lighting, viewing angle, exposure, profile, and product.

This matters when combining horizontal SteelTek Supreme with vertical Board-and-Batten, matching steel siding to Gentek soffit or fascia, or comparing a steel field panel with aluminum trim coil. Coordination is a design relationship—not proof of an optically identical finish.

Compare Physical Samples on the House

View SteelTek Supreme and SteelTek samples:

• Next to the roof and masonry
• Against window frames and proposed trim
• In direct sun and open shade
• From the sidewalk or street
• In both vertical and horizontal orientation where applicable
• During morning and late-afternoon light

A small digital swatch cannot reproduce coating gloss, texture, shadow depth, or the way a full steel elevation reflects its surroundings.

Does Kynar Make SteelTek Supreme More Dent-Resistant?

Do not credit the Kynar coating with all of SteelTek Supreme’s impact performance. The coating protects the surface, while dent resistance also depends on the steel gauge, yield strength, panel geometry, underlying support, and the force and shape of the impact.

Gentek identifies SteelTek Supreme as roll-formed 29-gauge steel and describes it as resistant to hail damage and denting. That does not mean every hailstone, ladder strike, branch, or construction impact will leave the panel unchanged.

Installation Can Erase the Product Advantage

A premium factory coating cannot correct careless handling, inappropriate cutting, incompatible fasteners, restricted movement, poor flashing, or an unsuitable wall.

The written installation scope should address:

• Existing siding removal or preparation
• Substrate flatness and fastening support
• Water-resistive barrier and flashing
• Compatible fasteners and accessories
• Manufacturer-approved cutting tools and blades
• Protection of cut edges and factory finishes
• Panel movement and fastening technique
• Storage and handling before installation
• Treatment of scratches or field damage

Gentek states that SteelTek Supreme can be cut using an approved saw blade. “Approved” is the important word. Contractors should follow the current instructions for the exact system rather than generalizing from another metal product.

Warranty Comparison Requires the Actual Certificates

SteelTek Supreme’s currently linked warranty provides 35-year limited chalk and color-change protection. It defines qualifying color change using a Delta E measurement and chalking through an ASTM D4214 rating.

Gentek’s currently linked general steel-siding warranty identifies SteelTek and provides 15-year limited chalk and color-change protection. It also includes limited hail protection and other coverage subject to its stated procedures, payments, exclusions, and remedies.

Gentek’s current SteelTek webpage displays a 35-year chalk and color-change summary, which conflicts with the linked warranty certificate. The responsible response is not to assume the webpage silently extends the written warranty.

Before ordering SteelTek, request written confirmation of the controlling warranty for the exact material and manufacturing period. Place that certificate with the signed contract and invoice.

“Lifetime” Does Not Mean Every Expense Is Covered Forever

Both warranties contain important conditions. Depending on the claim, these can include owner payments, manufacturer-selected remedies, liability limits, transfer schedules, prior insurance claims, notification requirements, and exclusions.

For example, the currently published warranties state that:

• Gentek must be notified and allowed to inspect before repair.
• Manufacturing-defect remedies are selected by Gentek under the warranty terms.
• Certain owner payments apply after the stated initial period.
• Hail claims require the homeowner to pursue available insurance first.
• Hail protection may cover replacement material without all associated labor.
• Transfer coverage becomes prorated and limited as described in the applicable schedule.

Marketing summaries are useful introductions. They are not replacements for the full warranty.

Compare Total Installed Cost, Not Panel Price

A responsible comparison includes:

• Field siding and waste allowance
• Corners, starter, trim, and mounting accessories
• Removal and disposal of existing cladding
• Sheathing and substrate repairs
• Water-resistive-barrier work
• Window, door, roofline, and masonry flashing
• Soffit, fascia, and gutter coordination
• Labor, staging, permits, and inspections
• Spare material and project documentation

If the SteelTek Supreme proposal includes better preparation or more complete trim than the SteelTek proposal, the price difference cannot be attributed entirely to the coating. Require contractors to bid the same defined scope.

The Bottom Line

SteelTek Supreme’s advantages are specific: Kynar PVDF coating technology, specified 29-gauge construction, additional D5 and Board-and-Batten profiles, low-gloss surface character, and longer chalk and color-change coverage under its current written warranty.

SteelTek remains a legitimate Galvalume steel-siding option with D4 and 8-inch horizontal profiles and a heat-fused PVC finish. It may be the more disciplined selection when those features meet the design and budget.

Choose between them only after comparing physical samples, complete installation scopes, current availability, and the actual warranty certificates. A coating name is meaningful, but it is not the whole exterior.
