Water-Resistive Barriers Behind Steel Siding: What They Do and Cannot Fix

Steel siding is the visible outer cladding, but it should not be expected to stop every drop of wind-driven rain by itself. A water-resistive barrier behind the siding helps collect and direct incidental water back outside—provided the material is continuous and properly connected to flashing.

The Short Answer

A water-resistive barrier, commonly abbreviated as WRB, is part of the wall’s rain-control system. It is installed behind the exterior cladding and integrated with windows, doors, roof intersections, penetrations and other flashing.

A WRB cannot repair rotten sheathing, stop a leaking roof, correct failed window installation or compensate for reverse-lapped flashing. Its effectiveness depends on continuity and detailing—not simply on whether housewrap is visible before the siding goes on.

Cladding and WRB Perform Different Jobs

Why Water Can Get Behind Siding

Building Science Corporation states that exterior claddings pass some rainwater and therefore require a way to control water that reaches the space behind them.

Water may enter behind siding through:

  • Panel joints and overlaps
  • Corners and material transitions
  • Window and door openings
  • Light fixtures, vents and utility penetrations
  • Roof-to-wall intersections
  • Wind-driven rain entering beneath trim
  • Leaking gutters or concentrated roof runoff

The presence of some incidental water behind cladding is not, by itself, evidence that the siding has failed. The wall should be designed so that this water can drain safely outward.

A WRB Is Not the Same as Waterproofing

Calling the WRB “waterproofing” can create the wrong expectation. Typical wall barriers are intended to resist and drain water under defined conditions; they are not intended to hold standing water indefinitely or correct continuous bulk-water exposure.

If a roof valley discharges against a wall or a gutter repeatedly overflows, that source must be corrected. Adding another layer of housewrap does not make concentrated runoff acceptable.

Continuity Is More Important Than Brand Recognition

A premium WRB with disconnected seams and poorly flashed openings can perform worse than a suitable material installed as a complete drainage system.

Continuity must be maintained:

  • Across the field of the wall
  • At inside and outside corners
  • Above and below windows and doors
  • At roof intersections
  • At brick, stone and other cladding transitions
  • Around pipes, vents, wires and mounting blocks
  • At the base and top of the wall

The Shingle-Lap Principle

Building Science Corporation explains that gravity drives drainage-plane performance. In a conventional shingle-lapped assembly, upper layers overlap lower layers so water continues toward the exterior.

Reverse laps direct water behind the lower material. Tape or sealant placed over an incorrect lap may not provide the same durability as rebuilding the sequence correctly.

Shingle-style lapping is a general principle, not permission to ignore a WRB manufacturer’s tested seam, fastening and accessory instructions.

Windows and Doors Are the Critical Test

A continuous wall barrier is only useful when window and door flashing drains onto it rather than behind it. Sill, jamb and head treatments must work together.

  • Sill flashing should collect and direct water outward.
  • Jamb flashing should connect with the sill treatment.
  • Head flashing should direct water over the opening.
  • The WRB above should integrate with the head flashing.
  • Exterior trim should not block intended drainage paths.

Use the window or door manufacturer’s instructions, the selected flashing-system requirements and current Gentek steel siding details for the actual wall.

Roof-to-Wall Intersections

Porch roofs, garage roofs and additions create locations where the roof’s drainage plane must connect with the wall’s drainage system.

Step flashing, counterflashing and kick-out details may be required depending on the roof and wall configuration. Siding receiver channels should not replace the roof flashing.

Staining near the bottom of a roof-to-wall intersection often indicates a runoff or flashing problem that should be investigated before new SteelTek Supreme panels conceal the area.

Penetrations Need More Than a Hole and Sealant

Lights, outlets, hose connections, vents, refrigeration lines and communications wiring interrupt the WRB. Each should use a compatible flashing or mounting detail that maintains drainage continuity.

A penetration plan should identify:

  • The component’s final location
  • A compatible mounting block or flashing accessory
  • How the accessory connects to the WRB
  • How the steel siding terminates around it
  • Required clearances and service access
  • Who is qualified to disconnect or extend the component

WRB Repairs Must Use Compatible Materials

Tears, holes and abandoned penetrations should be repaired using methods approved for the selected WRB. Random tapes and sealants may fail to adhere, chemically conflict with adjacent materials or lose bond after heat and moisture exposure.

Use the WRB manufacturer’s compatible tapes, flashing materials, primers and sealants where required. Document substantial repairs before the siding covers them.

Does the WRB Also Serve as an Air Barrier?

Some WRB products can function as part of an air-control system when their seams, edges and penetrations are detailed for that purpose. Simply wrapping the house does not establish airtightness.

Air-barrier performance depends on continuity and connections to roofs, foundations, windows, doors and other assemblies. The proposed material must be approved for the function being claimed.

Does the WRB Provide Insulation?

Conventional housewrap is not a meaningful insulation layer. It should not be assigned an R-value unless the exact product has documented thermal performance for the installed configuration.

Exterior foam or insulated sheathing may sometimes serve as insulation and, when specifically approved and detailed, may also form part of the water- or air-control system. Those products change fastening, flashing, trim depth and wall drying and require a complete assembly design.

Drainage Space Behind Steel Siding

Building Science Corporation explains that drainage requires space between the cladding and drainage plane, with the necessary space depending on the cladding and wall design.

Do not add furring, drainage mats or another spacer behind SteelTek Supreme without verifying compatibility with Gentek’s installation, fastening, trim and wind-performance requirements. A concept used behind wood, masonry or another metal panel system is not automatically approved for this product.

Existing WRB During a Re-Siding Project

Older housewrap or building paper should not automatically be reused simply because it is present. Exposure, tears, previous fasteners, incompatible repairs and disconnected flashing may have reduced its usefulness.

Evaluate:

  • Material identity and condition
  • Continuity across walls and corners
  • Tears, holes and elongated fastener openings
  • Connection to window and door flashing
  • Roof and masonry transitions
  • Whether repairs can be completed reliably

If the existing drainage layer cannot be identified or integrated with new flashing, a more extensive wall rebuild may be warranted.

What a WRB Cannot Fix

  • Rotten sheathing or framing
  • A leaking roof or gutter system
  • Failed window or door units
  • Negative grade directing water toward the foundation
  • Plumbing or mechanical leaks inside the wall
  • Reverse-lapped or missing flashing
  • Blocked sill and masonry drainage openings
  • An unsuitable or unstable siding substrate

Installation Quality Affects the Gentek Warranty

Gentek’s SteelTek Supreme warranty excludes damage caused by faulty or improper installation and by defects in the wall or materials to which the siding is applied.

A carefully selected finish warranty therefore does not eliminate the need for wall preparation, flashing and drainage. Product coverage and wall-system performance are related but distinct issues.

WRB Inspection Checklist

  • Identify the WRB product and its current instructions.
  • Repair sheathing and structural damage before installation.
  • Maintain continuity across wall fields and corners.
  • Use approved lap, tape, sealant and fastening methods.
  • Integrate sill, jamb and head flashing at openings.
  • Connect roof-to-wall flashing to the drainage system.
  • Flash utility and mechanical penetrations.
  • Preserve drainage exits at the bottom of assemblies.
  • Verify compatibility with exterior insulation or furring.
  • Photograph the completed WRB before installing steel siding.
