Why a New Aluminum Siding Panel May Not Match the Existing Wall

A replacement aluminum siding panel can have the correct manufacturer, product line, and original color name and still look noticeably different from the siding already installed on the home.

Existing aluminum has spent years exposed to sunlight, rain, airborne contaminants, temperature changes, cleaning products, and ordinary weathering. A replacement panel arrives with a fresh factory finish. Installing the two materials beside one another can expose differences that were not visible in a brochure or on a computer screen.

Color is only one part of the match. Contractors must also evaluate profile, exposure, butt projection, surface texture, gloss, seam geometry, and physical compatibility.

Original Color Does Not Mean Current Appearance

How to Conduct a Physical Sample Comparison

Use this process:

1. Confirm the sample's manufacturer, product, profile, and color
2. Place it directly beside the existing siding
3. Position it in the intended horizontal orientation
4. View it in sunlight, shade, and overcast conditions
5. Examine it from normal approach and street-level locations
6. Step back far enough to evaluate the full wall
7. Photograph the comparison from several reasonable viewpoints

Do not alter the existing siding with aggressive cleaning or polishing merely to improve the comparison. Document the condition that actually exists before proposing corrective work.

Look at the Entire Elevation
