Why the Starter Course Matters for Shake and Scallop Siding

The first course of siding is easy to overlook once a project is complete. Yet its position affects every shake or scallop course above it. If the starting reference is wrong, later panels may remain consistently wrong all the way to the roofline.

The First Course Establishes the Visual System

A starter component secures and positions the bottom of the first siding course. The exact component and installation method must be compatible with the selected product, but the underlying design principle is straightforward: the first course needs a level, properly located reference.

PEPA/VSI general installation guidance instructs installers to identify the lowest point of the wall and establish a level chalk line for the starter strip. That guidance demonstrates why layout begins with the building rather than simply following a foundation, porch or sidewalk that may not be level.

A starter course should follow a verified level reference—not an adjacent surface that merely looks level from a distance.

Level and Parallel Are Not the Same Thing

An older foundation, porch roof, deck or window assembly may slope slightly. Running siding parallel to one of those elements can reproduce that slope across the entire elevation.

A level siding course may therefore reveal that another part of the home is out of level. This creates a design judgment: the installer must preserve technically correct siding layout while avoiding a visibly awkward wedge or narrow strip near an existing feature.

These conflicts should be identified before installation. A planned transition, trim adjustment or localized correction generally looks better than allowing the courses to drift in an attempt to hide the problem.

Why Scallops Make Alignment Especially Visible

Scallop siding creates a repeated series of curved lower edges. The eye quickly recognizes the pattern, which means even a small layout inconsistency can become noticeable across a gable or wall.

Shake Profiles Still Need Disciplined Layout

Shake siding has a more organic appearance than scallops, particularly when the profile uses varied molds and cedar-like texture. That variation is meant to make the surface look natural—not crooked.

Gentek says Fairhaven Sound uses multiple shake mold patterns to reduce obvious repetition. Its extended panels are also intended to produce longer, smoother visual lines. Those features work best when the underlying courses remain level and consistently positioned.

Random texture should never be used as an excuse for careless course alignment.

Layout Should Be Planned Around Openings

Establishing the bottom course is only the beginning. The installer should calculate how repeated courses will meet windows, doors, horizontal transition bands and the top of the wall.

Poor advance planning can leave a very narrow piece below a window, create inconsistent bands between adjacent openings or place a visually awkward cut at the base of a gable.

The contractor should determine how the courses will rise from the transition and meet the sloped roof edges. Depending on the gable’s height and the selected exposure, the top course may require cutting and an approved finishing detail.

Centering a scallop pattern or balancing the cuts at opposite rake edges may also improve the appearance. This is a layout decision—not a reason to disregard Gentek’s installation requirements.

Starter Components Must Be Secure and Compatible

A straight line on the wall does not guarantee a successful first course. The starter component must be the correct type for the product, securely attached to an approved fastening base and installed according to the applicable instructions.

PEPA/VSI guidance warns that an incompatible starter strip may not engage the siding lock correctly. This can weaken the first course and affect the courses connected above it.

Fairhaven Sound incorporates an integrated panel-locking system that Gentek says is designed to increase strength and support a more uniform finished appearance. That system still depends on correct installation from the initial course upward.

Do Not Copy Generic Starter Measurements

PEPA/VSI manuals contain measurements for common vinyl siding installations. Those dimensions are useful for understanding general technique, but they should not be copied blindly into a polypropylene shake or scallop project.

The contractor should inspect the wall base carefully. Irregular sheathing, projecting masonry, deteriorated wood or inconsistent furring can make the starter component wave in and out even when its top edge appears level.

Wall preparation, water-resistive barrier installation and flashing should be completed before the siding layout is treated as final.

The First Course Must Still Accommodate Movement

Polymeric siding responds to temperature changes. The first course must be fully and properly engaged without being forced into a position that restricts the panel’s intended movement.

Gentek says Fairhaven Sound includes self-aligning nail slots and a temperature chart on the side tab to assist with panel positioning for expansion and contraction. Installers should use those features as directed and follow the current fastening instructions.

Forcing a panel upward to disguise a layout error is not a sound correction. The reference line and accessory placement should be corrected instead.

  • Following the foundation without checking level: An uneven foundation line is transferred into every siding course.
  • Starting on separate walls independently: Courses fail to align when they meet at a visible corner.
  • Ignoring window heights: Narrow or inconsistent cuts appear around prominent openings.
  • Using an incompatible starter component: The lower panel lock may not engage as designed.
  • Attempting to correct drift gradually: Courses develop a visible curve instead of remaining level.
  • Skipping the gable calculation: The final course or peak detail looks compressed and improvised.
  • Forcing panels tightly: The installation may restrict designed temperature-related movement.

Homeowners do not need to perform the layout, but they can ask for evidence that it has been planned.

  1. Where is the lowest point of the siding area? Ask how it was identified and incorporated into the reference line.
  2. Will courses align around connected walls? This is particularly important at visible outside corners and porches.
  3. How will the courses meet the windows? The answer should reflect advance calculation, not field improvisation.

Keep photographs of the wall preparation, starter installation and early courses with the project records. Once the wall is complete, those details will no longer be visible.
